In Oblivion Remastered, curing Vampirism is quite the challenge. The Elder Scrolls IV treats this condition as a significant transformation rather than just a simple ailment. If you catch it early while it’s still known as Prophyric Hemophilia, you can easily wipe it out. However, if you fully transform into a vampire, you may find yourself living as an undead creature for a long stretch of time in Oblivion Remastered.
The good news is that there are multiple ways to overcome vampirism and revert to your human form, all of which I’ve tested and detailed below. But before we dive into that… are you sure you want to? Being a vampire offers a mix of new abilities and enhancements, but comes with drawbacks including vulnerabilities and a requirement to feed on blood. If you’re curious about how to become a vampire, how to break free from it, and the pros and cons of each choice, we’ll cover everything you need to know about vampiric life in Cyrodiil.
How to Cure Vampirism in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
In Oblivion Remastered, there are three ways to cure vampirism:
- Cure it as a disease within the first 72 hours while it’s still Prophyric Hemophilia.
- Locate and use the Font of Renewal in Deepscorn Hollow.
- Complete the Vampire Cure quest involving the witch Melisande.
Their difficulty varies, with the easiest option being to treat it while it’s still in the Hemophilia stage. On the other hand, collaborating with Melisande involves a lengthy quest that requires extensive travel across the map. Let’s take a closer look at each option.
Prophyric Hemophilia
Players can become vampires by receiving damage from vampire NPCs, but the condition initially appears as Prophyric Hemophilia. This status lasts for 72 hours before evolving into actual vampirism. Fortunately, Prophyric Hemophilia can be treated like any other disease. If you address it promptly, you can avoid becoming a vampire altogether. You can do this by:
- Drinking a Potion of Cure Disease
- Casting the Cure Disease spell through Restoration magic
- Praying at any Chapel Shrine
- Consuming a Mandrake Root
If you wait more than 72 hours to cure your Hemophilia, you will become a full vampire, and the above methods will no longer work.
Additionally, it’s possible to voluntarily become a vampire through an NPC during the Dark Brotherhood questline in Oblivion Remastered. If you’re interested in how to locate these shadowy assassins, our guide will assist you.
Deepscorn Hollow and the Font of Renewal
At the location marked on the map, players can explore Deepscorn Hollow, an underground area accessed through an underwater entrance inside a hollow log. Once inside, proceed to the Vile Cloister where you’ll discover the Font of Renewal, a large stone situated in a pool.
To cure your vampirism, interact with the stone while having Purgeblood Salts in your inventory. There’s a mineable source of these salts located in the corner of the same room as the Font of Renewal.
Vampire Cure Quest
After contracting vampirism, visit Raminus Polus at the Arcane University in the Imperial City to start a (not-so-brief) quest for a cure, which follows these steps:
- Talk to Raminus Polus about finding a vampirism cure.
- He’ll send you to consult Count Janus Hassildor at Skingrad Castle.
- The Count will guide you to a witch named Melisande.
- Melisande resides in a hut located in Drakelowe, south of Cheydinhal.
- She will ask you to bring her five empty grand soul gems.
- Following that, you’ll need to collect two bloodgrass shoots, five nightshade leaves, six cloves of garlic, blood from any Argonian NPC, and dust from a vampire named Hindaril whom you must defeat.
- Return these items to Melisande and wait a day in-game for her to provide you with a potion that will cure your vampirism (and one for the Hassildors).
This quest is quite involved, but as a reward, you’ll receive 1,000 gold from the Count for your efforts.
Is Being a Vampire in Oblivion Remastered Worth It?
Choosing to be a vampire in Oblivion Remastered is a decision that hinges on your personal playstyle. There are numerous advantages and disadvantages that evolve based on how long it has been since your last blood meal (your vampiric stage increases by one every 24 hours without feeding).
- Vampire Benefits
- Attributes
- Immune to Paralysis
- Resistance to diseases (increases with the stage of vampirism)
- Resistance to weapon damage (also scales with vampirism stage)
- Boosts to Strength, Willpower, and Speed (affected by vampirism stage)
- Improves Acrobatics, Athletics, Destruction, Hand-to-hand, Illusion, Mysticism, and Sneak skills (varies with vampirism stage)
- Spells/Abilities
- Ability to cast Hunter’s Sight (night vision and Detect Life) starting from Stage 1
- Ability to cast Vampire’s Seduction (charm enemies) starting from Stage 2
- Ability to cast Reign of Terror (silence and demoralize enemies) starting from Stage 3
- Ability to cast Embrace of Shadows (night vision and invisibility) starting from Stage 4
- Attributes
- Vampire Drawbacks
- Increasing damage from sunlight exposure beginning at Stage 2 (intensifies with vampirism stage)
- Vulnerability to fire (again, dependent on vampirism stage)
- Mandatory blood consumption from sleeping NPCs to revert to Stage 1 of vampirism. This doesn’t harm the NPC, but it is considered a crime if caught.
- The character’s eyes will become red.
While the sunlight weakness can be a significant issue, the bonuses available are notable as well. This skillset is particularly beneficial for players focusing on unarmed combat or those pursuing stealth in the Thieves Guild questline in Oblivion Remastered.
