Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a variety of tools and spells for players to utilize. Unfortunately, that also means your foes have access to dangerous afflictions, one of which is Mummy Rot.
This debilitating status, inflicted by decayed mummies found in the Lower City sewers during Act 3, is particularly formidable. Not only does it lower your hit points, but it also prevents healing for an agonizing 20 turns.
In this guide, we’ll explore how to steer clear of this terrifying condition and the remedies available if you fall victim to it.
Understanding Mummy Rot in Baldur’s Gate 3
Mummy Rot is a debilitating condition that decreases the health of the afflicted character by 8 points every turn and lasts for a total of 20 turns. During this time, healing is completely off the table.
This ailment is one of the most dangerous in the game because it not only chips away at your health but also hinders any healing attempts for you and your allies. Even if a teammate brings you back after you’ve been incapacitated, the Mummy Rot status remains.
The enemy that delivers this attack employs a move called the Rotting Fist, making encounters with these mummies especially treacherous. You’ll encounter them primarily during your time in the Lower City, particularly during the Mystic Carrion quest, where you’ll battle a rotten mummy and its minions, who can continually inflict Mummy Rot.
Ways to Cure Mummy Rot
This status effect, classified as a curse, can be removed using the Remove Curse spell. It’s a level 3 Abjuration spell that can be learned by Wizards, Clerics, and Warlocks at level 5.
The spell requires a level 3 spell slot or higher and effectively wipes away all Hexes and Curses from the target.

If you have Gale or Shadowheart in your party, there’s a good chance they have this spell available. Additionally, you might come across a scroll that allows you to cast it, but such scrolls are quite rare.
You can also cure Mummy Rot by taking a Long Rest at your campsite, providing another strategy to recover from this ailment.
Another option is using the Greater Restoration spell, a level 5 Abjuration spell available to Wizards, Clerics, and Druids at level 9. This spell can remove various curses, including Mummy Rot, along with charms and petrification effects.
In summary, to effectively deal with Mummy Rot, you should have a spellcaster in your party—preferably one that specializes in healing. If you lack access to these spells, consider fighting mummies from a distance to minimize the risk of contracting this distressing affliction in Baldur’s Gate 3.
