In Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, the quests mostly have a calming and relaxed atmosphere. Even when hurrying to prevent someone from being caught with their pants down, the overall vibe stays cozy. For example, when little Daisy Took needs help with riddles from Nora, they generally aren’t too difficult. However, the first riddle, in particular, can be a bit challenging to figure out because the game offers little guidance.
The game emphasizes the strong sense of friendship among the Hobbit community as players help turn Bywater into a thriving village. This close group of friends and families support each other in many ways, including Nora Burrows offering to teach Daisy how to read. As part of these reading lessons, Nora challenges Daisy with three riddles that test her reading skills and thinking skills simultaneously. When Daisy gets stuck on a riddle, she comes to you, her new Hobbit friend, for assistance.
Riddle 1: “In the eye of the lake, there stands a tree…”
The first riddle from Nora is, “In the eye of the lake, there stands a tree. And in its roots, you’ll find what you seek.” Unlike other quests, clicking on this in the journal doesn’t give you a helpful hint, and talking to Nora or Daisy doesn’t help either.
To solve this riddle, you need to go to the spot that the riddle describes. Once you arrive, you’ll see glowing lights that trigger a scene with Daisy. There are many lakes on the map of Bywater, many with trees nearby, but the right spot is a small lake in the southern part of the map’s center, where there’s a tiny island. The “tree” the riddle mentions is actually a tree stump, which isn’t visible on the map.
Riddle 2: “In the heart of the forest, it calls…”
After solving the first riddle, Daisy shares her second one: “In the heart of the forest, it calls. Where the river doesn’t run, it falls. Where water doesn’t babble, it roars.” Like before, you need to go to the correct location to uncover more clues.
This spot is close to where you found the first riddle. Specifically, head east to where the road crosses the river, and you’ll find a small area with a beautiful waterfall. Approaching this area will bring up another scene with Daisy.
Daisy’s Final Riddle: “A traveler without foot or wheel, its journey done, now resting its keel.”
The last riddle mentions a “keel,” hinting at something nautical. It refers to an overturned boat near Old Noakes. To find it, visit the place where Old Noakes fishes off his jetty and then move slightly west, where an old rowboat rests on the land. Approaching it triggers the final scene with Daisy and the riddles.
While these riddles didn’t require much help from the player, they added fun side quests and made Daisy even happier in the game. Overall, solving them is a nice break from the main story, and they help bring the community of Hobbit friends to life.
