Initially introduced in *Monster Hunter 4*, Nerscylla is a Temnoceran monster—essentially a fancy term for a terrifying insect with menacing pincers. Among the various creatures in this category, Nerscylla stands out as one of the most creepy. With their reappearance in *Monster Hunter Wilds*, they have the potential to frighten a whole new audience.

Your first encounter with Nerscylla occurs in the Iceshard Cliffs, where they effortlessly use their environment to launch surprise attacks, often inflicting multiple status ailments. Taking them down can be daunting, but it’s definitely achievable.

Nerscylla – Strengths and Weaknesses

Your initial battle with Nerscylla will happen while you attempt to rescue a rather philosophical Lynian named Rove. As one of the few Temnocerans in the game, Nerscylla is a unique foe with few comparables. Their speed, ability to feint, and varied status ailments create a challenge, making it tough to prepare strategically.

These monsters are also quite sizable, which complicates targeting their more vulnerable spots, especially with smaller weapons. However, Nerscylla does have numerous openings that allow you to inflict significant damage. Here’s a brief overview of their strengths and weaknesses:

  • Weak Point – Retractable pincers.
  • Elemental/Ailment Weakness – Fire before the mantle is broken, Thunder afterward, and vulnerable to paralysis.
  • Elemental/Ailment Strengths – Resistant to Water, Dragon, and Sleep, and has some resistance to Thunder until the mantle is damaged.
  • Best Weapon Damage – Blunt weapons for tough areas, Severing weapons for softer segments, and Ranged weapons for targeting the stinger.

From this information, it’s evident that no single strategy will suffice to defeat Nerscylla. Their claws are remarkably tough, and while their mantle offers protection against Thunder, Fire becomes significantly less effective once the mantle is gone. Moreover, the wide range of status effects they can employ poses a great challenge, making it tough to prepare for everything.

On the plus side, their claw attack presents an opportunity to deliver solid damage. When their claws extend, they are marked as a weak point, allowing you to unleash powerful Focus attacks.

Best Equipment for Battling Nerscylla

Preparing to face Nerscylla can be tricky due to the numerous factors to consider. Should you prioritize Fire or Thunder elements? Would it be better to try and break the claws or focus on the softer parts? It’s wise to approach the battle with a single strategy to maximize your defensive capabilities rather than splitting your focus.

The Comaqchi Accessory provides Sleep Resistance, helping you endure Nerscylla’s stinger attack. Meanwhile, the Rompopolo armor set offers Poison Resistance against their pincers. You can either mix the two sets for moderate protection against both ailments or equip the entire Rompopolo set for enhanced poison resistance.

When selecting weapons, sharpness is crucial—especially for Severing types. Nerscylla’s claws require very high sharpness to inflict optimal damage. This is particularly important if you’re aiming for the head. Charge Blades can bypass this issue by charging up the sword, but most Severing weapons need to maintain high sharpness. Aim for at least blue sharpness weapons if possible.

Nerscylla – Fight Breakdown and Moves

Despite its large size, Nerscylla boasts impressive speed and can switch between attacks quickly, using webs to maneuver around you. The various status effects from their attacks are a major concern, so staying mobile is essential to avoid their swift assaults.

Here’s a list of their main attacks and some tips on how to counter them:

Move

Description

Counter

Claw Swipe

Nerscylla rises briefly and performs a quick slash.

This attack is weak and can be easily negated with a shield or high armor.

Stinger Stab

Nerscylla raises itself and stabs with its stinger, causing sleep.

This move inflicts sleep but minimal damage; avoid standing directly under them when they rise.

Web Shot

From a distance, Nerscylla fires a volley of webs that remain on the ground briefly.

The attack’s range is short, making it easy to dodge. Close in after this move to deal damage during their cooldown.

Pincer Attack

Nerscylla dashes forward with its pincers extended, inflicting poison.

Dodge just before the strike or block if you have a strong defense. Target their exposed pincers to maximize your damage.

Slam Attack

Nerscylla pulls back and crashes down onto you.

This is easy to dodge, allowing ample time for a counterattack.

Web Dash

Nerscylla uses webs to reposition, causing damage if the webs hit.

Dodge when they shoot a web, but try to stay nearby to attack once they’re done.

Web Swing

Nerscylla can swing from its web in ceilings, landing with a powerful blow.

Dodge this attack and stay close to counterattack.

Web Dive

While in its nest, Nerscylla can dive and surprise you from below.

They can get caught in their own webs if you stun them while they’re crawling underneath, giving you a prime opportunity to hit.

Web Grab

Nerscylla can dangle from its web and grab unsuspecting prey below.

Shoot them down with Slinger ammo when you see them hanging.

Unlike other Temnocerans like Lala Barina, Nerscylla makes extensive use of webs for both mobility and trapping. While this grants them extra agility, it also means they are immobile when not using webs. Their stinger and pincers are their most lethal attacks, with the former easily dodged and the latter providing solid counter chances during their vulnerable moments.

Nerscylla – Drops and Materials

You can encounter Nerscylla in both Low Rank and High Rank, with similar drop rates in both scenarios. Focus your attacks on their claw, mantle, and stinger to acquire rarer items, although many can also drop from wounds and carvings.

Below is a detailed list of materials you can collect from Nerscylla:

  • Low Rank

    Material

    Where It Can Be Acquired

    Nerscylla Claw

Broken Part (Left Claw), Carving, Target Reward

    Rubbery Hide

  • High Rank

Interestingly, Nerscylla only drops a claw if you break its Left Claw.

Nerscylla does not introduce new materials in High Rank, only upgraded versions of the original. Therefore, the drop rates are identical, and they originate from the same sources. Fortunately, breaking their parts isn’t overly challenging, so stocking up on these materials should be fairly straightforward.
