Pokémon GO has some exciting plans for March 2026 in celebration of its 30th Anniversary. During this special month, almost every Pokémon from the Kanto region will make a return. While focusing on nostalgia from Kanto, players will remember Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, who is known for providing one of the game’s toughest Trainer battles. By completing specific Research tasks and choosing the right team, players can earn impressive rewards worth working for.
In February, Giovanni’s team changed slightly after a “Taken Over” event earlier this year. Most of his Pokémon remained the same, but new Pokémon and events in Pokémon GO have given players fresh options to make his battle easier. If you have a Super Rocket Radar, you can locate Giovanni and try out new strategies on him.
Giovanni’s Team & Counters (March 2026)
To defeat Giovanni, it’s best to bring Pokémon that are strong against his team’s types. For example, using Pokémon with type advantages can make the fight easier.
A helpful image shows strategies and Pokémon counter options for defeating Giovanni. As of now, the “Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos 2026 – Global” event has introduced new Pokémon like Mega Victreebel and Mega Dragonite, which are powerful counters. Knowing Giovanni’s team ahead of time helps in choosing the right Pokémon to use.
Giovanni’s team is divided into three phases, called “waves,” each with different Pokémon. The first wave is always the same, but the second wave varies among three possible Pokémon, making it tricky to know which counters to use. The third wave always includes a Legendary Pokémon, which can be a tough opponent.
Important to note: All of Giovanni’s Pokémon are Shadow Pokémon. Shadow Pokémon have more health, deal more damage, and are generally harder to defeat.
Below is a table that lists Giovanni’s team members for March 2026, their weaknesses, and good Pokémon to counter each one:
| Wave | Pokémon | Weaknesses | Best Counters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shadow Persian (Normal) | Fighting | Lucario, Machamp, Terrakion, Blaziken, Heracross |
| 2 | Shadow Machamp (Fighting) | Fairy, Flying, Psychic | Diancie, Mega Dragonite, Alakazam, Gardevoir, Salamence |
| 2 | Shadow Rhyperior (Ground/Rock) | Ground, Water, Ice, Steel, Grass, Fighting | Mega Victreebel, Mega Swampert, Chesnaught, Torterra, Zacian |
| 2 | Shadow Kangaskhan (Normal) | Fighting | Lucario, Machamp, Terrakion, Blaziken, Heracross |
| 3 | Shadow Incarnate Thundurus (Electric/Flying) | Ice, Rock | White Kyurem, Tyranitar, Tyrantrum, Mega Diancie, Mamoswine |
Interestingly, Giovanni’s team now has more common weaknesses than in past battles. Since he often uses Normal-type Pokémon, Fighting-types are essential. His Rhyperior also shares Fighting-type weaknesses along with his Shadow Persian and Kangaskhan, helping you build a strong team to counter him.
Recommended Team to Beat Giovanni
For March 2026, a good team might include:
- Diancie: Excellent against Giovanni’s Thundurus with its Rock moves and can also easily handle Machamp with Fairy moves.
- Swampert: Uses Water-type moves to take down Rhyperior’s defenses.
- Lucario: Its Steel typing can resist most of Giovanni’s Pokémon’s attacks and dish out strong Fighting moves against Persian and Kangaskhan.
Rewards for Beating Giovanni
When you defeat Giovanni, you automatically earn 5,000 Stardust, which is a helpful boost. More importantly, you get a chance to catch his Shadow Incarnate Thundurus, a rare Electric/Flying Legendary Pokémon. This Pokémon is great for future battles or tough raids.
Additionally, defeating Giovanni grants you three in-game item bundles. These contain random items, which may be the same or different each time. Possible rewards include:
- 4 Revives
- 4 Max Revives
- 4 Hyper Potions
- 4 Max Potions
- 1 Unova Stone
While there might not be another “Taken Over” event soon, upcoming Pokémon releases could change the best strategies for battling Giovanni. Some players may aim to catch a shiny Thundurus multiple times, although the chances in March 2026 are quite low.
In short: Preparing the right team based on his Pokémon weaknesses, tracking him with a Super Rocket Radar, and knowing your counters will help you conquer Giovanni in Pokémon GO this March.
