Life on Arrakis in Dune: Awakening brings its own set of challenges. From fierce sandstorms and marauding bandits to gigantic sandworms, the threats are real. And yes, as a tenacious survivor on Arrakis, you’re obligated to pay taxes to the Imperium for your sub-fief to thrive. So, how do you manage and pay these taxes in Dune: Awakening?
As soon as you pass the Vermillius Gap in the game, a quest about your taxes will activate. However, there are some important details to keep in mind before you set off. Here’s the scoop on taxation in Dune: Awakening.
Understanding Taxes
After crossing the Vermillius Gap and setting up an advanced sub-fief outside the South Hagga Basin, you’ll need to pay taxes on your sub-fief.
The tax amount in Solari varies based on the size of your sub-fief and the resources you produce.
The bigger your land claim and the more resources, like spice, that you gather, the greater your tax obligations will be.
Tax rates on spice, set by the Landsraad, can significantly affect your tax bill, so keep an eye on that.
Remember, if you’re running a basic sub-fief console in the South Hagga Basin, which serves as the tutorial area, you won’t incur any taxes on it. However, these basic consoles come with many limitations.
You can check your tax obligations on your advanced sub-fief console.
How to Pay Your Taxes
Once you know how much you owe, you’ll need to travel to a settlement to pay your taxes. You can do this at two settlements:
Both settlements feature Imperial Consulates with Imperial Representatives where you can pay.
You must get to these settlements using an Ornithopter. If you own one, you can fly there yourself, but early in the game, that’s often not the case.
More likely, you’ll need to hire an Ornithopter pilot to take you to one of the settlements. Head to a tradepost like The Anvil or Griffin’s Reach and talk to a pilot to fly you to Arrakeen or Harko Village.
The flight to either settlement costs 2,500 Solari, so ensure you have enough for the trip and your tax payment. The return trip to Hagga Basin is complimentary.
Where to Find the Imperial Consulate
In Arrakeen and Harko Village, you’ll find an Imperial Consulate where you can settle your tax dues. Here’s where to locate each:
- Arrakeen – In the top left corner of your map, located in the diagonal hall.
- Harko Village – On the right side of your map, also in the diagonal hall.
Just go to the main desk and talk to the Imperial Representative to pay your taxes.
Consequences of Not Paying Your Taxes
Handling taxes in Dune: Awakening might seem daunting, but it’s simpler than it sounds, and the game is quite lenient regardless of what it might suggest.
Payments are due approximately every two weeks, and there’s a longer grace period for late payments.
Check in periodically with your sub-fief to ensure you’re up to date with your taxes.
If you miss the payment deadline, the Sardaukar, the Emperor’s mercenaries, will come for you.
Additionally, your base’s shields will deactivate, resulting in the loss of everything inside, while the harsh storms of Arrakis will gradually destroy the sub-fief.
In the end, unless you manage numerous sub-fiefs across Arrakis, your tax bills shouldn’t be astronomical, but not paying them can lead to serious repercussions.
