Early in Dune: Awakening, you’ll need to establish your first sub-fief, or base, in the South Hagga Basin, which serves as the game’s tutorial area. From there, as you delve deeper into the expansive world of Arrakis, you’ll have the freedom to set up a new sub-fief almost anywhere on the map, though some areas are restricted. You might be curious about the best spots to construct your sub-fief.

If you’re looking for ideal locations to build, this guide is for you. Here’s a rundown of the prime spots on Arrakis where you can set up your base in Dune: Awakening.

Where Can You Build Sub-Fiefs?

When choosing a location for your base or sub-fief, there are several factors to consider regarding where you can and can’t build.

Base Building Requirements

Details

Support

If you see a message saying ‘not enough support’ while placing a sub-fief console, it usually indicates that the console is positioned too high.

To elevate your sub-fief, you can move your console later. Use it to define your land plot, and then use foundations to raise your base as needed.

Not On Open Sand

Although there’s technically no rule against building on open sand, it’s unwise as this exposes your base to sandworms.

Sub-Fief Distanced

You cannot position another sub-fief console too close to an existing sub-fief console, even if it’s your own.

Not Near POIs

Building zones are restricted near points of interest such as trade posts and shipwrecks.

Apart from these restrictions, you can build your sub-fief console in most areas of Arrakis. However, certain locations are definitely more advantageous than others.

Best Early Game Base Locations

In the initial stages of your journey in Dune: Awakening, you will create a sub-fief in the South Hagga Basin. You’ll have considerable flexibility in choosing where to build your base.

The ideal strategy is to select a location near most of the main tutorial quests you’ll embark on. This gives you several excellent options for your base in the early game:

Sub-Fief Location

Details

Wreck of the Alcyon

You’ll be collecting various materials near the Wreck of the Alcyon.

Since you’ll often travel here, it’s smart to place your sub-fief nearby, ideally on the western side of the wreck.

This wreck is situated right in the center of the South Hagga Basin.

Griffin’s Reach

You’ll need to visit Griffin’s Reach frequently in the early stages for contracts in the main quest.

Additionally, this area is a great place to earn extra Solari, which is crucial at this point in the game.

Griffin’s Reach is located on the west side of the South Hagga Basin. Look for the tall granite tower in the distance.

Imperial Testing Station No. 2

This station is centrally placed between the two previous locations.

You’ll visit it for at least one early quest, making it the perfect spot for your early sub-fief.

Look for Imperial Testing Station No. 2 just west of the Alcyon.

For the early game, there’s really no wrong choice for your sub-fief location. These spots are mainly helpful to minimize the back-and-forth travel across the map.

Best Late Game Base Locations

After you leave the South Hagga Basin, your journey through Arrakis will open up a vast map to explore. Once again, you have significant flexibility in determining where to place your sub-fief.

However, you should keep a few key considerations in mind when selecting a base location:

  1. Centrality
  2. Nearby Resources
  3. Hazards

With these factors in mind, here are some prime locations to consider for your sub-fief in the mid to late game:

Base Location

Details

The Anvil

The Anvil is probably the next trade post you’ll find after leaving the South Hagga Basin.

Its location is centrally positioned on the map, making it accessible for Ornithopter rides and various contracts.

Find the Anvil at the north border of the Eastern Vermillius Gap.

Imperial Testing Station No. 13

This station is arguably the most centrally located spot on the Arrakis map, situated in the Western Vermillius Gap, which borders every region.

The primary advantage of this location is its accessibility, though it lacks specific resources.

Look for Imperial Testing Station No. 13 on the northwest edge of the Western Vermillius Gap.

Bottom of the Hagga Rift

The Hagga Rift is rich in unique resources like Carbon Ore, Erythrite Crystal, and Salvaged Metal.

This area is also mostly shaded, reducing the concern of running out of water.

However, avoid building at the top of the rift, as it can lead to a lot of unnecessary travel.

Look for the Hagga Rift on the eastern side of the map. Note that it also extends into more central regions if desired.

Atreides Fortress

Depending on your chosen house, placing your base near the Atreides Fortress might be advantageous.

This location offers many house contracts and serves as a trade post. It’s also centrally located on the map.

Find this fortress on the southeast border of the Eastern Shield Wall, toward the top left corner of your map.

Harkonnen Fortress

Similar to the Atreides Fortress, if you’re aligned with House Harkonnen, consider building near their fortress.

This location is also close to The Anvil, allowing you to find a balance between these locations if desired.

Look for the Harkonnen Fortress on the far eastern side of the map.

Keep in mind that while you can build bases in the Deep Desert, they will be reset each week when the map resets.
