A game like **The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy** wouldn’t be complete without the chance to spend your free time socializing with your quirky classmates. This game offers a variety of engaging activities during these moments that help you bond with your friends.
During your Free Time, you can choose to create gifts for your classmates, improve your combat skills in the Training Room, embark on expeditions to gather resources, or focus on boosting Takumi’s grades. There’s no shortage of options in The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy when it comes to what you can do during these segments.
What Activities Can You Engage In During Free Time?
If you’re a newcomer to the Danganronpa series, you’ll notice their influence throughout The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. One notable feature is the ability to spend free time exploring the school grounds and participating in various optional activities with your teammates.
Between key story segments—which come up frequently as the game has multiple endings—you’ll find yourself in Takumi’s bedroom, where he may express a desire for some time alone. The Free Time start screen will then appear, granting you the option to select an activity to enjoy, each of which helps you strengthen relationships, improve grades, or increase stats.
It’s often more efficient to use the school map for fast travel during these segments, unless you want to take a moment to chat with other characters along the hallway or explore the area a bit.
Practice Combat in VR Battles
combat practice.
If you find yourself struggling with combat mechanics or wish to get more practice using different teammates, the VR machine in the Training Room is a great option. You’ll face various school invaders and gain valuable experience in combat situations for when it’s time to fight for real. This practice machine offers a range of scenarios, and you’ll retain any rewards earned after completing battles.
Before diving into the VR Battle machine, don’t forget to visit the Gear Upgrade machine in the Training Room. You can enhance your teammates’ attacks and gear without using up your Free Time segments. Additionally, you can work on your teammates’ skills in the Garage, which becomes accessible on Day 020.
Increase Takumi’s Grades by Spending Time with Teammates
Once your teammates decide to join the fight and have used their Infusers for the first time, you can engage in conversations during your Free Time segments. These interactions are called Student Activities, and based on who you spend time with, you can improve one or two of Takumi’s grades, influenced by the characteristics of that team member.
When you see a classmate with a green icon over their head on the map or in the hallways, it indicates that they’re open to spending time with you in that Free Time segment. Choose to chat with them, and you’ll earn a grade boost after your conversation.
Create and Give Out Gifts Using the Gift-O-Matic
Once you unlock the Rec Room and Leisure Room on Day 010, you’ll collaborate with Eito to learn how to operate the Gift-o-Matic, a large device that transforms raw materials into presents for your classmates. These gifts can significantly enhance the subjects associated with your grades, depending on how much the classmate appreciates the item you’ve selected.
Make sure you have the necessary resources and any special materials before proceeding. The game will prompt you to choose which classmate you wish to give your gift to. After giving the present, you’ll receive any additional grade points (if applicable), and you’ll be transported back to your room, ending the Free Time segment. Unlike previous games where you could collect gifts to distribute later, be strategic in your approach!
Instead of making random choices, it’s wise to gather intel on the best gifts for each teammate in The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. The first gift you give will earn you bonus points, and it generally boosts their corresponding subject on the report card. Gifts that a teammate enjoys are recorded on their profile.
Go On Expeditions to Collect Resources
Remember the fire extinguishers you found in the **Entrance Hall**, which Sirei mentioned could help you navigate through the Undying Flames and into the world outside the Academy? He was right—you can gather a team of four students and explore beyond the Undying Flames during your Free Time segments, but keep in mind that expeditions consume the entire day, so you can only set out in the Morning time slot.
During your expedition, you’ll navigate in a board game format, making choices that will allow you to collect a variety of resources for use back at the Academy (for gifts or enhancing attacks). You might find not just resources but also extra Battle Points, rare materials for gifts that you can’t find easily, and optional battles. Just monitor your HP and return to school with your findings to convert them into usable resources while allowing time to heal any lost HP.
Utilize the Library for Studying
Another area you unlock after the Day 017 battle against the second Commander is the Library, where you’ll encounter Eito and Shouma. Eito is keen to use the space to develop better combat strategies, but Takumi can also visit during Free Time segments to read books to boost his grades.
Each book requires two segments to complete, but you will gain a significant number of points for your grades after finishing. Plus, reading this material reveals plenty of lore, so avid learners will surely want to spend time exploring the library!
Use Sleep to Fast-Forward Time
Finally, while I wouldn’t advise this until you’re in later playthroughs and familiar with all the Free Time options discussed, you can choose to select the bed in Takumi’s room rather than going out at the start of a Free Time segment. The game will confirm if you’d like to nap, and if you accept, you’ll skip directly to the next story event or Free Time segment, depending on your timing.
For instance, if you nap in the Morning but there’s still Free Time in the Afternoon, you’ll wake up in the Afternoon and need to nap again if you still want to skip the day. Should you sleep in the Morning and there’s a story event later that day, Takumi will discuss it upon waking after the first Free Time period.
