FromSoftware’s games are recognized for their distinctive storytelling style, often relying on subtle hints found in item descriptions to flesh out the game world. The original *Elden Ring* follows this tradition, but *Elden Ring: Nightreign* shifts to a more straightforward narrative approach.
In *Nightreign*, you take on the role of Nightfarers, which are pre-defined characters each with unique stories and playstyles. One character, Wydler, has connections to others and possesses memories that unlock additional areas within the Roundtable Hold.
What Is The Journal?
The Journal is a significant book located in the Roundtable Hold, containing the memories of each Nightfarer in the game. Initially, you’ll find a single entry for each character, with more becoming available as you progress. Typically, each character has around eight entries that unlock sequentially.
You can view the journal entries anytime while in the Roundtable Hold, no matter which character you’re currently using. Remember to finish any Remembrances as they appear; new journal entries won’t unlock until you’ve completed the previous ones.
How To Unlock Memory Fragments
Memory Fragments serve as the key to unlocking new journal entries and Remembrances. Unlike typical items you collect, these are automatically granted to you when you meet certain criteria and won’t show up in your inventory. They simply activate the next journal entry or Remembrance for the character you’re playing.
Unlocking Memory Fragments can vary by character, but a guaranteed way to earn them is by completing Expeditions and defeating the Nightlord at the end. Generally, later Remembrances require more gameplay progress.
For instance, the first Remembrance can be unlocked merely by reaching the boss at the end of your first night, regardless of whether you defeat it. The second may require you to reach the Nightlord, while the final one often requires you to actually conquer a Nightlord with your character.
In some cases, like with Raider, beating a Nightlord might yield the next Journal entry instead of the next Remembrance. Sadly, you can only find one Memory Fragment per match, regardless of your overall performance.
Wylder’s Remembrances
Wylder, like all Nightfarers, has three Remembrances for you to unlock and experience. These involve extensive exploration across both Limveld and the Roundtable Hold and can also reveal new locations. You can start working on them once you have access to the latest journal entry.
Completing these Remembrances is rewarding not just for the characters’ backstories but also for the powerful gameplay enhancements they offer. Here’s what you need to know to complete all three of Wylder’s Remembrances.
Remembrance #1
Wylder’s first Remembrance is quite extensive, requiring you to venture out to Limveld. Here are the steps to complete it:
Make sure to unlock Duchess as a playable character before attempting this Remembrance.
- Speak with Iron Menial.
- Travel to a cave in Limveld to find a Whetstone.
- Defeat the Crystalian enemy guarding the Whetstone.
- Return to Iron Menial.
- Request to borrow the earring.
- Hold the earrings up to the light in the marked area behind Iron Menial.
- Present the repaired earring to Duchess.
You’ll be transported to the Realm of Remembrance while completing this task, and you must remain there to achieve your objective in Limveld. The location will be highlighted in red on your map, usually at the end of a cave. Be aware that it will be protected by a Crystalian enemy, which you need to defeat before claiming the Whetstone. Make sure to stance break them to make the fight easier.
Once you’ve completed the objectives, you’ll earn a unique Relic, the Slate Whetstone, which grants Wylder an enhanced follow-up attack when using a Greatsword.
Only one Remembrance can be active in a match, so it’s best to tackle these objectives solo. You can allow yourself to be defeated after completing the goal.
Remembrance #2
In Wylder’s second Remembrance, you’ll explore the Roundtable Hold again, with no need to return to Limveld. Here’s what you need to do:
- Locate the changes in Roundtable Hold by reading letters from piles in the room with the Visual Codex, totaling three letters.
- After the last letter, a door will open somewhere; speak with Iron Menial there. This is the door beneath the stairs that leads to the lawn area near the entrance of Roundtable Hold.
- Enter the newly opened Crypt and chat with Iron Menial.
- Investigate the tombs in the crypt before speaking with Duchess at the shore.
Completing these steps will finish this Remembrance and unlock a new Relic Rite for Wylder.
Remembrance #3
The final Remembrance for Wylder sends you back to Limveld, but this time, there’s a specific Shifting Earth Event to consider. You’ll need to defeat another enemy guarding a vital item, and here are the tasks:
- Pick up the key from the table.
- Go down to the crypt and open the chest using the key.
- Converse with the Recluse; you can choose how to respond, but both options will move the Remembrance forward.
- Discuss the Silver Tear with Iron Menial.
- Locate a Silver Tear in Limveld. This occurs during the Eternal City Shifting Earth event within the Realm of Remembrance.
The initial steps are straightforward, especially since they’ll be marked on your map. However, finding the Silver Tear will be more challenging, guarded by a Spirit Troll in a secluded area of the Eternal City. It’s advisable to tackle this right at the beginning of the second day for more time and experience from the first day under your belt. As you approach the area, be cautious of a Black Knife Assassin that may join the fray.
When facing the troll, make good use of Wylder’s Ultimate Art for significant stagger damage to take down this enemy swiftly. After defeating the troll, collect the Silver Tear and proceed on your way. You can afford to be defeated at any point afterward.
Even if the Black Knife Assassin enters the battle, you only need to defeat the troll to pick up the Silver Tear.
With the Silver Tear in hand, return to the Iron Menial to complete this Remembrance. You’ll unlock the Silver Tear Relic along with Wylder’s Remembrance outfit. Upon defeating the final boss with Wylder after finishing all three Remembrances, you’ll unlock a unique extended ending just for him.
