In Dune: Awakening, your sub-fief is essential for accessing drinking water while you navigate Arrakis. You can recycle sweat with your Stillsuit and store some water, but having a reliable water supply in your sub-fief is crucial. Water is also necessary for crafting advanced equipment and technology.
Researching and building a windtrap is one of the best methods to store water in your sub-fief. This structure helps you gather water from the environment, even when you’re away. Here’s how to unlock and build the windtrap.
How to Unlock the Windtrap
To unlock the windtrap, you need a sufficient amount of Intel. You can find the blueprint under Steel Products in the Water Discipline research tab.
Before attempting to build the windtrap, ensure you have already set up a Survival Fabricator, as you’ll need it later.
The research for the windtrap requires five Intel.
Note that you need to progress beyond the South Hagga Basin tutorial area in Dune: Awakening and complete that part of your journey before you can research and eventually make the windtrap.
How to Construct the Windtrap
Unlike many initial machines in the game, the windtrap is a bit more complex to build and requires a significant amount of materials.

Remember, you’ll also need a sufficient water supply in your sub-fief to refine Steel Ingots, so bring your Dew Reaper along while harvesting.
Once you’ve gathered the necessary materials and refined your Silicone Blocks and Steel Ingots, you’re ready to build a windtrap.
How to Use the Windtrap
When you’re ready, grab your construction tool and go to the Utilities tab to build the windtrap. Make sure to place it outside, yet within your land claim.
You’ll also need to use a Survival Fabricator to make filters for the windtrap.
Fortunately, makeshift filters are fairly inexpensive to create. However, some other filters can be pricier.
The windtrap requires both makeshift and standard filters.

Use your Survival Fabricator to make one of these filters, then insert it into the windtrap. Remember, you will need to replace these filters periodically to ensure the windtrap keeps functioning.
Windtraps require a considerable amount of power, so you may also need to build an additional generator to keep it running.
Once the filters are in place, the windtrap will slowly gather water, even when you’re away from your sub-fief. This water can be used for crafting or for drinking.
