The Dál Riata tribes in Tainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalon have largely kept to themselves lately, steering clear of the usual troubles plaguing the Avalonians. However, they still grapple with challenges in the freezing plains of the Forlorn Swords, some due to their own choices and others stemming from the repercussions of King Arthur’s actions.
One man, Gerf’hanr, aspires to unify the Dál Riata and lead them to Kamelot—or at least unite them for the benefit of all. But this goal can’t be achieved without addressing unresolved issues. It’ll be your task to connect with the Volker Tribe and help them regain their lost pride and cultural essence.
How To Start Shattered Pride
As part of the main quest, Divided We Fall, you’ll need to assist all four Dál Riata tribes with their concerns before they consider joining the Moot, including the Volker Tribe.
They have either three or four quests depending on your choices: Shattered Pride, Follow Her Path, and The Forked Path are the primary three, while Thing On The Doorstep may serve as the fourth.
To find the Volker Tribe Village, head to the eastern edge of the Forlorn Swords. The shortest route is to go north from the Capital, where Gerf’hanr is located, cross the bridge over the lake, and then take the winding path to the east around the mountain.
Once you arrive at the village, talk to the guard for entry, then ascend the stairs. A man named Tyge will block your path, and you will need to fight him to the death before you can meet with the chieftain, Angsvar.
After defeating Tyge, you can inform Angsvar about the fight to trigger the side quest, Condolences, which leads to another side quest from Tyge’s wife, Helmi, titled When Gods Speak.
Inside Angsvar’s dwelling near the altar at the village’s top, convince him you’ll assist the Volker, and he will guide you to another part of the village located on a different mountain.
How To Reclaim The Old Volker Village
Head east from the village and follow the path until it branches off into four options. Take the path that ascends the mountain. You will soon encounter spiked walls and face a few nameless Dál Riata.
Defeat them, and then choose between the left path for a lengthy detour that offers more enemies and loot, including a named enemy called Scumrot, or the right path for a more direct route to your objective.
Remember to loot their remains for armor and weapons, as these can fetch a good price, especially the Reflex Bows.
Cross the bridge to the next area of the old Volker Tribe Village. Here, you will quickly face off against a group of Bandits and Nameless Dál Riata, including the boss, Ylvren the Awakened.
Eliminate the weaker enemies first while maneuvering around the arena to avoid the boss’s bear minion, which can stun you with its leap and leave you exposed to other threats.
Once all the enemies, including Ylvren, are defeated, the quest will advance, allowing you to report back to Angsvar about your success and use the nearby Elevator Pass as a shortcut down.
Speak to Angsvar again, and you’ll complete Shattered Pride, earning 4,800 EXP and unlocking the next quest for the Volker: Follow Her Path.
How To Find The Matron’s Insignia
After your conversation with Angsvar, leave his dwelling and climb the stairs, taking the path around the altar until you reach a second altar with a totem. Then head downhill to the Máthair Temple located at the back of the village.
Speak with Bridei inside for guidance, then open your inventory and smoke the Etherbloom Pipe he gives you to reveal trails hidden in the Wyrd.
If you’re utilizing a Mage Build, Bridei offers several enhanced spells like Hailstorm, Stormpiercer, and Caustic Wrath that are worthwhile to purchase.
Exit the Máthair Temple and take the southern path you may have used to reach the village, crossing the ice bridge to the southeastern edge of the area.
Upon reaching the Crossroads fast travel point, continue down the lower path past the ruins to the Shrine Cellars. Enter and progress through the hole in the wall into the chamber where you’ll need to fight a Bottomless.
After defeating it, you’ll find Frig’s corpse by the tallest totem in the room. Loot her to obtain the Matron’s Insignia, completing Follow Her Steps and triggering the next quest, The Forked Path.
Who Should You Show The Matron Insignia To First?
After crawling through the small tunnel across from Frig’s corpse for a shortcut back to the entrance, return to the Volker Tribe Village. Here, you’ll decide whether to present the Matron’s Insignia to Angsvar first or show it to Bridei first.
You can speak with Elspet before starting the Volker quests for context, but it seems there is no way to prevent her death, even if you visit her house prior.
Presenting the insignia to Angsvar is mandatory for The Forked Path quest, but you can choose to show it to Bridei as well, which unlocks a second side quest, Thing On The Doorstep, a special recipe, and an alternate way to resolve the quest.
Bringing The Insignia To Angsvar
If you bring the Matron’s Insignia to Angsvar first, you’ll unlock a third objective in The Forked Path where you’ll need to investigate the circumstances around Elspet’s death.
Due to a grammatical error, Neasa and Elspet’s House is mistakenly labeled as Nessa and Inge’s House. However, you can still find Neasa inside.
Go to Nessa and Ingve’s house in the southeastern corner of the village, next to Stigr’s House, and talk to Neasa at the table to get a key item for the quest—Elspet’s Letter.
From this point, you can either show the letter to Angsvar or present the Matron Insignia to Bridei for his quest before being locked out of it.
Bringing The Insignia To Bridei
If you bring the Matron’s Insignia to Bridei before giving Elspet’s letter to Angsvar, you’ll unveil a second side quest, Thing On The Doorstep, and gain access to the true Máthair Temple via the doorway in the wall.
Inside, you’ll face a Fore-Dweller Knight after drinking from the basin. This enemy is a weaker version of the Wyrdstalker that will come after you later in Cuanacht. Defeating it allows you to take some of the potion from the basin and return to the mortal realm.
Speak with Bridei again for essential information, as he will provide you with three Máthairs’ Battlerage Potions to give to Angsvar, along with the recipe for it for your use. Completing this side quest also grants you around 4,500 EXP.
How To Complete The Forked Path
Return to Angsvar, speak with him, and show him Elspet’s letter to reveal the circumstances of her death. During this final discussion, you will face one last decision impacting the Volker Tribe, but ultimately, they will agree to join the Moot regardless of your choices regarding their tribe’s future.
While Helmi is involved in the side quest, When Gods Speak, you don’t need to finish this quest to suggest her as the next Matron.

After making your decision and finishing the conversation, The Forked Path will conclude, rewarding you with around 5,000 EXP. You can either report the outcome to Gerf’hanr to receive a reward or continue assisting other tribes if you haven’t completed that yet.
