In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Monoco boasts a wider range of skills than any other character, making it a bit challenging to determine the best way to optimize his performance. While he possesses capabilities across the board, you’ll need to select a specific role for him within your team.
When it comes to rapidly filling enemy Break Meters and stunning them, Monoco stands out as the prime character for the job. By breaking defenses and creating openings for attacks, he can truly shine. Here’s how to turn Monoco into a reliable barrier-breaker.
Ideal Weapon and Attributes for Monoco
Monoco is equipped with several weapons to boost his Break capabilities, with Joyaro and Urnaro being the top contenders. Among these, Joyaro is more effective since it focuses directly on enhancing your ability to Break enemies, while Urnaro rewards you after you’ve achieved Breaks.
For Urnaro, focus on Agility and Defense as your primary attributes. Achieving maximum ratings of 99 in both will make Monoco quite resilient. You can further enhance this by allocating extra points into Vitality or increasing his Critical Rate by boosting his Luck; both paths are viable.
If you opt for Urnaro, favor Vitality and Luck; make Agility your third Attribute to ensure Monoco has plenty of turns.
Joyaro Traits (At Level 20+)
- Monoco always begins battles in Almighty Mask.
- Monoco inflicts 20% more damage for each consecutive turn he avoids taking damage, capping at double damage.
- Monoco deals double Break Damage while in Almighty Mask.
Urnaro Traits (At Level 20+)
- Monoco immediately switches to Almighty Mask after performing a Break on an enemy.
- All allies receive 2AP when Monoco shifts into Almighty Mask.
- Monoco’s Break Damage is boosted by 50%.
Top Skills for Monoco
Equipping Joyaro guarantees that Monoco will deal double the Break Damage with his first skill in every encounter, thanks to the Mask bonus from being in Almighty Mask at the fight’s start. As such, always begin with your most potent skill.
By the end of the game, most characters should achieve double turns due to the Cheater Lumina. Therefore, you can use Monoco’s first turn to load up on AP and then unleash Creation Void, a skill found only in specific locations such as the Lumiere Gardens and the underwater caverns known as Renoir’s Drafts.
Creation Void also gets an extra damage boost when used in Caster Mask, but it won’t receive the Break Damage bonus from Joyaro unless you are in Almighty Mask.
While waiting for Almighty Mask to cycle back around, prioritize inflicting damage and filling enemy Break Meters. Skills like Grosse Tete Whack and Chapelier Slash apply Defenseless and Mark, respectively, making them useful options. Additionally, Moissonneuse Vendange and Duallist Storm (available at Endless Tower) allow Monoco to Break foes with full meters.
For his sixth skill slot, consider adding Pelerin Heal—after all, there’s no such thing as too much healing!
Top Luminas for Monoco
For Monoco, the focus should be on aggressively attacking and Breaking foes, while other characters provide support to maximize the opportunities he creates. Make sure he has essential Luminas like Cheater, Painted Power, Dead Energy, and Sweet Kill, and fill the rest of his roster with anything related to “Break.”
Breaking Luminas
Breaker, Critical Break, Breaking Counter, and Breaking Shots are all cost-effective Luminas that enhance the Break Damage Monoco deals through his attacks. Break Specialist lowers base damage slightly but significantly boosts Break Damage, costing just one point, making it an ideal choice.
Many of Monoco’s skills can be expensive, so adding Combo Attack and Breaking Attack is a clever way to Break foes without needing to collect AP for Vendange or Storm.
Breaking Burn and Fueling Break may not be essential, but they synergize well with numerous builds, especially if Monoco teams up with Maelle or Lune.
Damage Luminas
Since Break Damage also depends on dealing actual damage, enhancing Monoco’s total output has considerable benefits. Even simple Luminas like Augmented Counter and Augmented First Strike can have a significant impact, particularly when combined with the Breaking Luminas listed earlier—especially when initiating with a powerful skill like Creation Void!
AP Luminas
To keep Monoco ahead in AP management, Combo Attack and Cheater will help, but you should also consider boosting his gains with Energizing Turn, Time Tint, and Energizing Stun. The latter is particularly effective given that Monoco will consistently Stun enemies.
In a similar vein, Healing Stun and Stun Boost are worth considering if you have the points available.
