Surfing in Shadow is a unique challenge course located on the Radiance Layer of Donkey Kong Bananza. This course offers an obstacle course experience with a twist: to finish it, players must surf on the remains of defeated enemies (and yes, it’s more playful than it sounds) by maneuvering their bodies through a maze of thorns. Trust us; it’s cuter than it seems!
The main strategy here is to navigate through the shadows. However, mastering this alone will only help you acquire two out of the three Bananadium Gems. Keep reading if you want to uncover all the secrets of Surfing in Shadow.
How to Access the Sealed Level on the Radiance Layer
To start Surfing in Shadow, you might first need to unlock it. Turn away from the level entrance and make your way to the igloo. Once there, punch through the igloo.
Inside, you’ll encounter a builder who will unlock the level for 1,000 gold. Pay the fee, and you’re good to go!
How to Obtain the Second Bananadium Gem in Surfing in Shadow
At the beginning of the course, look for a slim pathway to the left. Since this area is well-lit, you won’t be able to ride the purple enemies here. Complete the initial stage until you reach a rest stop, then drop down to the level below.
Here, you’ll find red enemies. You can ride these across the lit area, so attack them, grab one, and carry it back up the ladder. After that, surf back the way you came until you reach the curved path. It may be narrow, but there’s no rush, so take your time to secure the second Bananadium Gem.
How to Complete Surfing in Shadow
For those having trouble with the basics, here’s a straightforward guide. At the start of the course, lure a purple enemy into the shadow until it turns into a hard white shell. Pick up this shell and surf with it (using ZL), allowing you to glide over the thorns.
Just remember, staying in the shadows is essential. If you expose the shell to light, it will revert to a purple shell and quickly wear away. This is why you need the red enemy to access the secret path.
In the second segment of the course, do the same. Lure the enemy into the shadows, grab it, surf, and navigate to the finish line. You can jump while surfing to clear obstacles—just make sure to avoid stepping into the light. Happy surfing!
