Believe it or not, there are quests in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and its Remaster that require absolutely no combat. One such example is the quest involving the Daedric Prince Sanguine, where the only battle you’ll face is to maintain your dignity.
This quest is simpler than many other short Daedric artifact challenges, but it can be somewhat costly. Sanguine will throw some surprises your way during the quest, so let’s cover everything you need to know.
Preparing for Sanguine’s Quest
You won’t need to focus on combat skills or choose a specific character build to complete Sanguine’s challenge. However, you will require at least two pieces of jewelry to gain entry to the restricted quest area.
In practice, two rings will suffice. Curiously, you don’t need to don fancy garments; we managed to enter while wearing a full suit of Orcish heavy armor. You can also persuade the guard at the entry if needed.
Starting Sanguine’s Quest
Like the other Daedric quests, you’ll first need to locate the Shrine of Sanguine. It’s situated about 575 meters northwest of Skingrad, atop a hill.
Talk to Engorm, the monk dressed in a robe, to learn how to communicate with Sanguine. For this quest, you need to offer a bottle of Cyrodilic Brandy to the daedra’s statue; it’s a rather pricey drink.
Finding Cyrodilic Brandy
The easiest way to acquire Cyrodilic Brandy is by purchasing it. You can find it at The Gilded Carafe or The Main Ingredient in the Imperial City Market District, where a bottle typically costs around 145-155 gold.
You can also find Cyrodilic Brandy in other locations or through various methods:
- Buy it at the Lonely Suitor Lodge in Bravil.
- Steal it from Lazare Milvan’s House, located in his upstairs bedroom.
- Steal it from the Odiil Farm in southeastern Charrol.
- Loot it as a rare drop from Dremora found in Oblivion Gates.
Once you have the brandy, return to the Shrine of Sanguine and present it to the statue. Sanguine will welcome you and assign you a task: cast a spell named Stark Reality on the Countess of Leyawiin.
She will be hosting a dinner party, and the Daedric Prince wants all the guests to be affected as well.
Gaining Entry to the Dinner Party
To start this part of the quest, you need to have two pieces of jewelry equipped. Head to Castle Leyawiin and enter the main meeting hall, then turn right. You’ll encounter a guard blocking access to the dinner party.
With the required “attire” equipped, select the “Dinner Party” option to get past him. For role-playing, you might want to wear lavish clothes instead of armor, though it’s not strictly necessary.
If your Persuasion skill is 70 or above, you can also convince the guard to let you through.
Once inside, simply cast Stark Reality in the center of the table while you’re in the room with the guests. All attendees, including yourself, will lose their items, gold, and gear.
If you cast Stark Reality and don’t affect all the guests, you’ll keep your gear, but you will fail Sanguine’s quest.
After casting the spell, the guests will immediately turn hostile. Instead of fighting back, let the guards arrest you. Serve your time, and once you receive confirmation that you’ve completed Sanguine’s task, you can return to his shrine.
Obtaining the Sanguine Rose
Sanguine will be pleased with your antics, even if it came at your expense. For your efforts, he’ll reward you with the Sanguine Rose staff and restore your gear via a chest near his statue.
The Sanguine Rose is a staff with ten charges before it requires recharging. If the projectile it fires hits an enemy, it will summon a powerful being to attack that foe.
However, there’s a twist: if the summoned entity defeats its target, it will then turn against you, stopping only if killed or when its time expires. Use the Rose cautiously!
