The Daedric Princes from The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion can show their favor if you know how to please them, and that remains unchanged in Oblivion Remastered. Meridia, one of the kinder Daedra, sets you on a spiritual journey when you encounter her statue in Cyrodiil’s wilderness. While the quest is straightforward, it comes with its own set of hurdles.
As with any Daedric quest, finishing Meridia’s task grants you a potent artifact—this time, a ring. This guide will provide all the necessary details to navigate the quest successfully.
Completing the Meridia Quest
While we mentioned that Meridia’s quest is simple, it definitely isn’t easy. You’ll encounter necromancers and their undead allies in a cramped cave, making maneuvering difficult.
During our playthrough, we found ourselves often overwhelmed by a swarm of skeletons, zombies, and damaging spells. As a result, we recommend you be at least level 15 before attempting this quest, giving you a solid advantage.
Be sure to equip yourself with quality gear, including enchanted weapons, and stock up on healing potions to counter any damage you might take. We donned Orcish Armor and employed a Destruction/Conjuration battlemage build, which proved effective for this quest.
Each Necromancer you confront in this quest carries healing potions for health, Magicka, and Fatigue. If you find yourself low on supplies as you advance, don’t forget to check their pockets.
Lastly, don’t hesitate to retreat and regroup if needed. If the tide turns against you, pull back and prepare to re-engage.
Starting the Meridia Quest
The easiest part of Meridia’s quest is initiating it. Just travel about 200 meters directly west of Skingrad to reach her Shrine. Speak with the high priest, Basil Ernarde, who will guide you on how to gain an audience with the Daedric Prince.
You need to offer something connected to the undead at her statue. Specifically, interact with it while holding one of these items:
- Bonemeal
- Mort Flesh
- Ectoplasm
You only need one of these items, and once you present it, Meridia will communicate with you.
She’ll inform you that a group of necromancers is stationed in the Howling Cave southeast of Skingrad. If you seek her favor and reward, head there and cleanse the cave of these heretics.
Clearing the Howling Cave of Enemies
Here’s where it gets complicated. The Howling Cave is filled not just with Necromancers, but also their undead minions. Expect to battle skeletons, zombies, and even Wraiths. Watch out for the Wraiths, as they can Silence you, temporarily preventing you from casting spells.
The cave’s compact rooms mean you can easily find yourself surrounded if you’re not careful. The dungeon has two levels to navigate: the Howling Cave and the Howling Cave Lower Galleries.
To finish Meridia’s quest, you must eliminate all Necromancers inside. Only then will you be able to return to Meridia for your reward.
The first part of the Howling Cave features a main hallway with various side passages. In the initial area, you’ll encounter mudcrabs and rats, particularly to the right.
Once you move past the hallway, a Skeleton Champion will chase you down one of the side paths. Defeat it and its summon, then continue deeper into the tunnel.
The tunnel will turn right and seemingly end at a dead end where a Wraith guards the exit. Dispatch the spirit and look to the right at the tunnel’s end for a secret door that will grant you access to the Lower Galleries.
Clearing the Howling Cave Lower Galleries of Necromancers
The path that leads into the Lower Galleries is trapped with a falling spiked ball, alongside the enemies waiting for you. Initially, you’ll face two Necromancers, two Zombies, a Skeleton, and whatever undead the Necromancers might summon.
Even with a summon of your own, that’s a daunting situation. If you overcome this initial assault, take some time to loot the Necromancers for potions and spell scrolls.
In the Lower Galleries, there are two more sections to clear—one to the right and another to the left of the entrance. If you head right, you’ll find a Necromancer, Wraith, Skeleton, and any additional creatures the Necromancer conjures.
The side corridor you pass on your way to the larger opponents can also house an extra Necromancer, who will summon more enemies for you to defeat.
Return to the main hallway and proceed down the left path, past the alchemy table, towards the final Necromancer and Wraith. Eliminating the Necromancer will complete the Howling Cave portion of Meridia’s quest.
After looting the spellcasters and any chests or coffins, return to Meridia’s Shrine. She will commend your efforts and reward you with the Ring of the Khajiiti.
The Ring of the Khajiiti is tremendously powerful, particularly for stealth-oriented characters. Not only does it enhance your speed by ten points, but it also provides a constant 35 percent Chameleon effect while worn.
If you combine enough Chameleon effects, you can become nearly invisible without needing potions of Invisibility. This effect applies even if you’re wearing heavy armor, though at that point, why would you need to sneak?
Receiving the Ring of Khajiiti signals that you’ve successfully completed Meridia’s quest.
