Nintendo introduced amiibo figures back in 2014, compatible with the 3DS, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and now the Nintendo Switch 2. These collectible figures can unlock various in-game rewards, gear, and more by simply tapping them on the NFC touchpoint located on the Joy-Con 2 or Pro Controller.
Most amiibo are ready to use right out of the package. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 also allows you to register them for additional perks. Whether you’re new to amiibo or looking to transfer your existing collection from an older console, we’ll guide you through this straightforward process.
Some amiibo, such as those from Splatoon, need to be registered before you can use them in games.
How to Register an Amiibo
To register your amiibo with the Nintendo Switch 2, follow these steps:
- Select the gear icon on the home screen to access System Settings.
- Scroll down to the end of the menu, select System, then choose System Update to ensure your console is up-to-date.
- In the System Settings menu, select amiibo.
- Choose Enter Owner and Nickname.
- Place your amiibo over the NFC touchpoint. For the Joy-Con 2, this is the right analog stick, and for the Pro Controller, it’s located at the top-center where the logo is.
- Select which Nintendo account you want to register the amiibo to.
- Input a nickname for the amiibo.
- Confirm the Owner and Nickname, then select OK.
- Tap the amiibo on the NFC touchpoint again to complete the registration.
How to Reset an Amiibo
If you receive a previously owned amiibo as a gift or buy one second-hand, it may still have the original owner’s data. Luckily, resetting an amiibo so you can register it for your own use is quite simple.
- Access System Settings by selecting the gear icon on the Nintendo Switch 2 homepage.
- Scroll down and select amiibo.
- Choose Reset Amiibo.
- Tap and hold the amiibo over an NFC touchpoint.
- The Nintendo Switch 2 will display the current Owner and Nickname of the amiibo.
- Select Reset. A pop-up will ask if you want to continue.
- Select Reset again and tap the amiibo to an NFC touchpoint to finish the process.
Once an amiibo is reset, its data cannot be recovered.
