Sometimes, what you really want in a Soulslike game is to wield a massive hammer and smash enemies right in the face. Sure, magic has its charm, and dexterity builds fit the fast-paced gameplay of newer FromSoftware titles, but there’s something undeniably dependable about strength. That’s exactly the vibe that Elden Ring Nightreign embodies with the Raider character.
This mighty pirate can easily stun and attract the attention of foes thanks to his increased poise, allowing him to barrel through incoming attacks. He serves as a robust tank, making him a perfect companion for the more fragile Nightfarers like Recluse and Revenant. Most importantly, he delivers powerful hits.
Overview of Raider
The Raider is one of the more straightforward characters to grasp. With his high health pool and ability to stagger opponents, it’s wise to stay close to your enemies and maximize his A-tier stamina to unleash more attacks.
Unlike the Guardian, you don’t need to rely on Guard Counters to stun enemies; just attacking them does the trick.
Although Raider has impressive poise, letting him withstand blows without interruption, dodging is still a good idea. After all, this is a Soulslike game, and you want to conserve your limited flasks.
He has limited FP, and both his Faith and Intelligence scaling are merely D-tier, so relying on spells and incantations won’t be effective. For additional healing, you’ll either need to depend on teammates or gather Warming Stones.
As the tank of the team, your job is to keep enemies focused on you. This frees up teammates to revive one another and allows ranged characters like Ironeye and Recluse to deal damage from a distance.
Given that other characters have lower HP, it’s crucial to keep enemies away from them. Overall, Raider is the easiest Nightfarer to use, relying on hefty weaponry to crush foes.
Raider’s Traits
Like all Nightfarers, Raider boasts three unique traits that align perfectly with his role as tank.
Character Skill
One of his notable skills is Retaliate, where he takes reduced damage while headbutting enemies, potentially causing them to fall, flinch, or stagger. This skill is particularly effective against slower opponents due to its lengthy startup time.
Passive Ability
Raider’s passive ability complements his Character Skill, enabling him to execute it without being knocked out of the action.
If Raider takes a lethal blow while using Retaliate, he will drop to one HP instead.
If he sustains enough damage, it will enhance Retaliate the next time he uses it, transforming it into a more powerful uppercut capable of staggering massive enemies, making it especially valuable during boss fights. Just keep in mind, it’s slower.
Ultimate Art
As the team’s tank, Raider’s Ultimate Art aims to assist nearby allies while also inflicting solid damage.
When executing Totem Stela, Raider drives a gravekeeper’s wedge into the ground to summon a massive stone obelisk, boosting the attack power of nearby allies and providing a vantage point for ranged allies.
This obelisk lasts for 30 seconds and can be deployed anywhere, making it a versatile tool—handy not just during battles but also for breaking stone statues for loot or reaching elevated platforms.
Best Weapons to Use with Raider
With an S rank in Strength, Raider is exceptionally suited for wielding Colossal Weapons, greataxes, and great hammers. These weapons align well with his playstyle since they are effective at staggering foes. However, avoid lighter weapons like katanas, as he has only C-tier Arcane and Dexterity scaling.
While Ironeye excels as an archer, he struggles with larger weapons, making Raider an ideal choice for using a Greatbow thanks to his Strength scaling. Combined with Totem Stela, he becomes a surprisingly adaptable character, even effective at ranged combat, although it’s best to keep the focus on attracting enemy attention.
