Osmium is a crystalline mineral with a dark blue hue found in The Planet Crafter. It is a rare and vital material needed to make advanced gear like the T2 and T3 Jetpacks, the T4 Drill, and the T4 Ore Extractor.
To gather Osmium, you need special strategies and careful exploration. As you advance in the game, more opportunities to find Osmium become available. Since it’s not as plentiful as other resources, it’s important to plan your actions. Look for melting ice caves, upgrade your ore extractors, and be prepared to navigate meteor events to collect sufficient Osmium for late-game terraforming.
Where to Locate Osmium
You can find Osmium deposits in caves and by mining manually or using a Tier 2 Ore Extractor or better. Occasionally, you can also spot Osmium in Treasure Crates scattered across the map or underwater as lakes form. Additionally, meteor showers can deposit Osmium on the surface, giving you another chance to gather this essential resource.
Utilize your Jetpack to access higher terrains where Osmium deposits and Treasure Crates can appear. If you’re not satisfied with the current Jetpack, consider using a modified Better Jetpack.
Treasure Crates
Treasure Crates are blue, metal footlockers found throughout the game map. They resemble player Storage Crates and can be located in wrecks and bunkers. These crates, along with their rarer counterparts known as Golden Crates, contain various items, including Osmium, which are valuable in the early stages before you can access Ice Caves.
Osmium Caves
The main locations for Osmium are Ice Caves, which are initially blocked by ice barriers. As you increase the planet’s heat level, those barriers will melt, allowing access to the caves. Key Osmium cave entrances, along with their coordinates, include:
- Steep Hill at 396:144:993 and Sulfur Fields at 454:70:1228.
- The Grand Rift at 1937:2:442 and the Dune Desert at 1855:14:573.
- The Arches at 138:164:2057 and Meteor Crater at -140:162:1707.
- Sand Falls at 631:62:1831.
In addition, there are two mixed mineral caves containing Osmium: an Osmium-Pulsar Quartz cave near coordinates 973:43:-975 and an Osmium-Iridium cave around coordinates 328:4:-181.
Ice generally melts around 100 K (kelvin), though some areas may melt at 45 µK (microkelvin).
You can mine some cave resources with just a Tier 1 Ore Extractor, but others require a Tier 2 extractor or higher. However, not all caves will allow the placement of an extractor due to insufficient flat ground or soil. In those situations, you’ll have to gather materials by hand, but be aware that once you deplete a resource, it’s gone for good.
Osmium Meteor Events
Occasionally, Meteor Events bring mineral-rich meteors crashing onto the planet’s surface. An Osmium meteor shower occurs at a Mega Terraformation Index (MTi) of 700 or higher, flooding the environment with a blue glow. The resulting meteorites yield several Osmium and sulfur drops.
