The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered features a variety of weapons, from classic swords to daggers and axes. While all weapon types have their strengths, using a hefty mace can be particularly satisfying. If you’re a mace enthusiast in this game, you definitely need to seek out the Mace of Molag Bal.
As with many Daedric artifacts, obtaining the Mace of Molag Bal involves completing a quest for the Daedric prince. To get started, you need to know the location of the shrine and the quest requirements.
How to Start the Molag Bal Quest
For Daedric quests like this one, you typically need to reach a certain level; for the Molag Bal quest, you must be at least level 17. Additionally, you will need to make an offering at the shrine. Specifically, you must offer a Lion Pelt to Molag Bal in order to initiate the quest.
Where to Find Molag Bal’s Shrine
Molag Bal’s shrine is located west of the Imperial City, southeast of Chorrol, and northeast of Skingrad. It can be found next to Fort Wooden Hand and Gottlesfront Priory, northwest of these landmarks. Expect to encounter leveled enemies while navigating this wild area.
Where to Find Lion Pelts
To kick off the Molag Bal quest, having a Lion Pelt in your inventory is crucial. There are numerous ways to acquire this item, as it drops from many enemies. If you want a more reliable method, consider completing a quest where lions are guaranteed to appear.
The quest “A Rat Problem” within Anvil’s Fighter’s Guild is the most reliable way to secure lion pelts, as you will be fighting lions there. Since this is the first quest available in the Fighter’s Guild, any character can initiate it after joining.
How to Complete the Molag Bal Quest
Once you have all the necessary items, approach the shrine of Molag Bal. He will instruct you to travel to a nearby village where you’ll find a man named Melus Petilius. He will give you a cursed mace, and your next task is to allow Melus to kill you with that mace.
Melus Petilius can be found in Brindle Home, just southwest of the shrine. Upon arriving, you can ask the villagers for directions to him, but you may need to increase their disposition toward you for them to willingly share his location.
The villagers will speak of Melus’s past deeds and let you know he now lives quietly after his wife’s death. The quest will update, marking his location. He visits his wife’s grave nearby between 10 AM and noon.
Go to Melus when he’s at the grave and drop the Cursed Mace near him. To provoke him, you should attack him while he is at the grave. He won’t fight back until you do this. Once he becomes hostile, he will pick up the mace and engage you. You’ll need to allow him to damage you.
Keep in mind that Molag Bal will teleport you away when your health drops below 20 points, but Melus Petilius could potentially deal fatal damage. It’s advisable to save your game before letting him attack.
How to Obtain the Mace of Molag Bal
If your health is sufficiently low, Molag Bal will teleport you back to the shrine. Speak to the shrine again to complete the quest, and he will reward you with a Daedric weapon.
The Mace of Molag Bal is a powerful Daedric artifact that deals significant damage, especially if your Blunt Weapons skill is high. It has effects such as Absorb Strength for five points over ten seconds, and Absorb Magicka for five points over the same duration.
