Where Winds Meet features a surprisingly broad story that weaves in dozens of legends and cultural elements from the wuxia genre. The first main chapter, called Heaven Has No Pier, takes place in the region of Qinghe and functions almost as the backstory or origin story for your character’s legend.
This opening chapter is split into four quests, with the final one being For Whom Does He Return. It’s a lengthy quest that does not leave much room for breaks and includes one of the game’s toughest boss fights near the end. If you need help, this walkthrough provides a detailed guide for the final main story quest in Qinghe.
For Whom Does He Return begins after you recover your hidden treasures and finish the previous quest, Dust on the Rhombus.
Meet Yi Dao at the Ruined Temple
The first step is to meet Yi Dao back at the ruined temple where you previously fought the Horse Dancer boss. Talk to Yi Dao to learn about his past and Chu Qingquan. During this conversation, you’ll notice shadowy figures arriving on boats, heading toward Blissful Retreat.
Attack on Blissful Retreat
Once you show your determination to Yi Dao, hop on his horse and ride into town to stop the invaders. You will quickly get separated. When you regroup, fight off the attackers and help Du Qiaoxian, who will tell you that the village is caught in a maze that traps everyone inside. After dealing with more enemies, follow the path with Du Qiaoxian and Yuan Jin’gang.
You will need to explore four points of interest around the village to gather information. Use the lines around the target reticle to locate each point.
Saving the Villagers
After scouting the vantage points, it’s time for action. You need to rescue three villagers trapped under rubble in collapsing buildings. To do so, fight through groups of Aureate soldiers. Move to each villager’s location, defeat enemies, and free them.
Next, go to help Ruby and Braid. Fight off enemies at their locations, then head to Sweetwine Tower. There, Yi Dao is in combat with more Aureate soldiers, including their commander. Assist him in defeating them. Once the villagers are safely inside the tower, prepare for more enemy waves.
The Final Stand
You charge toward Ruby’s flag but don’t make it. Now, you and Yi Dao are surrounded once again by Aureate soldiers. Several waves of enemies will come, each led by a commander. Prioritize taking out the archers first, then focus on the foot soldiers while Yi Dao handles the commander.
Qianye the Witch
Next, you face Qianye, the witch responsible for the chaos over Blissful Retreat. The fight has multiple phases. The first phase resembles the Heartseeker boss fight from earlier, but the second phase becomes more intense with powerful attacks like sweeping scythe slashes.
Use Meridian Touch to block some of Qianye’s attacks and make her vulnerable. Missing these defenses will cause heavy damage and apply debuffs. When Qianye’s health drops to about half, she will send you into a mirror world, where you face her other half.
In the mirror world, her attacks are similar but different—she may vanish and then charge at you with an overhead slash. When her health is nearly gone, she launches a devastating attack and switches back to her original form. Deal a bit more damage, and you’ll return to the real world, where Yi Dao is still fighting.
Watch the cutscenes and the heroic fight alongside Yi Dao, which ends with you waking up as a horse a few days later.
Homeward Path
This is a normal part of the game. As Ruby’s horse, Clip-Clop, follow the quest marker back to your character’s location. A short cutscene will then play, completing the quest.
