In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a significant portion of gameplay revolves around the Oblivion portals, which are central to many quests. The “Breaking the Siege of Castle Kvatch” quest is the first part of a two-part adventure that many players may encounter as their introduction to an Oblivion portal.
Depending on when you tackle this quest and the difficulty setting you’re on, it can be quite challenging if you’re not properly equipped. This guide will take you step-by-step through your journey into Oblivion, assisting you along the way as you confront the ongoing situation in Kvatch.
How to Begin the Quest
To find Kvatch, head to the western side of the map, located between Skingrad and Anvil. You’ll need to ascend a hill where the sky grows darker and flames engulf the landscape to initiate the quest.
Once you reach the top, talk to Savlian Matius. He’ll explain the situation and, if you choose to help, guide you toward the Oblivion gate, warning you that your involvement could be dangerous.
Quest Walkthrough
After agreeing to help, move toward the Oblivion gate. You’ll encounter several enemies that you’ll need to defeat along your path.
Upon entering the Oblivion gate, you’ll find yourself in a hostile realm filled with more monsters. If Ilend Vonius survives the onslaught, he will approach you.
Depending on your instructions, he can either join your party as a companion or return to assist at the gate.
Feel free to explore Oblivion, as it contains unique materials that are hard to find elsewhere.
Once you’re ready to continue, head to the left side.
This area will have plenty of obstacles, including falling rocks and enemies, but eventually, you will arrive at a door adorned with glowing red symbols. Enter this door to reach the inside of the tower.
The Blood Feast
Inside the tower, you’ll discover various doors and paths. You are welcome to explore, but keep in mind that the foes within may be tougher than those outside.
How to Free the Prisoner
To proceed in Oblivion, you’ll need to ascend the tower. While most routes lead upward, some may take you on detours. However, you’ll discover that the doors to the upper levels are locked.
Go through the only unlocked door, which will lead you across a bridge to another tower.
In this next tower, there’s a prisoner being guarded. Eliminate the guard, obtain the key, and talk to the prisoner. They will inform you that you need to retrieve the Sigil Stone from the highest part of the tower to close the Oblivion gate.
How to Reach the Tower’s Summit
Return to the original tower and use your new key to unlock the door to the Citadel Hall. Be cautious, as traps await you in this area. Once you reach the center of the room, interact with the Runed Portal to ascend further.
At the top of the tower, you will find the Sigil Stone. Collect it, and you will be transported back to Cyrodiil.
Talk to Savlian

Once outside, Savlian will express his belief in your abilities. He’ll ask for your help to assault the city gates next.
You can take your time; return to him when you feel ready.
Storm the Gates

When you’re ready, let Savlian know, and you’ll all storm the Kvatch gate together.
Inside, you’ll face numerous enemies. Fight alongside your allies, and after eliminating all the foes, speak to Savlian again. He’ll lead you to the Chapel, where he suspects there may be survivors from the siege.
Inside the Chapel

In the Chapel, you’ll find a small group of soldiers. After Savlian speaks with them, you’ll need to talk to him again. He’ll request your assistance in retaking the castle, and when you confirm your readiness, this will trigger the next quest: ‘The Battle for Castle Kvatch’.
