After joining the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered, you’ll discover a wealth of new opportunities. Once you’ve completed some initial tasks for the guild, you’ll be given more significant missions, including one called Misdirection. This quest aims to shift the Imperial Watch’s focus away from the Waterfront District to relieve some pressure on the guild.
The Misdirection quest involves a series of simultaneous high-stakes heists, designed to stretch the Imperial City Watch’s resources thin. Your first step is to locate Methredhel, who will help coordinate these efforts.
How to Begin Misdirection
To start Misdirection, you need to have sold at least 300 gold worth of stolen goods, completed Ahdarji’s Heirloom, and been promoted to the rank of Prowler. Only then can you accept this exciting quest from S’krivva, which will help you regain control of the Imperial Waterfront District for the Thieves Guild.
How to Clear Out the Imperial City Waterfront District
Your next goal is to find Methredhel in the Imperial City. Head to any neighborhood and speak with the beggars to get clues about her whereabouts.
You’ll discover that Methredhel is hiding at Dynari Amnis’ house in the Talos Plaza District, so make your way there.
Talk to Methredhel to hear her plan for staging prominent thefts that will pressure Lex into action. Your mission includes stealing Hrormir’s Icestaff from the Arcane University.
Stealing Hrormir’s Icestaff
Hrormir’s Icestaff is located in the Arch-Mage’s room, where he sleeps from 1:00 am to 7:00 am. Methredhel will also provide you with a note to place in his nightstand.
Enter the Arcane University and use the teleporters to access the Arch-Mage’s room. Sneak into the Arch-Mage’s Quarters to grab the Icestaff from the foot of his bed, and remember to put the note in the nightstand.
If you’re already a top member of the Mages Guild or the Arch-Mage, this part will be a breeze since you’ll essentially be stealing from yourself.
Once you’ve done that, return the staff to Methredhel to receive your next task: spying on Hieronymus Lex until the siege on the Waterfront is lifted.
Spy on Lex & Return the Staff
Head back to the Imperial City Waterfront and locate Lex near the shacks, where your house might be located if you bought it in this district.
As you approach, you will be unable to move and will witness a Dremora delivering a note to Hieronymus Lex, commanding him and his men to vacate the Waterfront District.
Be sure to pick up the note from the ground and bring it back to Methredhel in the Talos Plaza District.
With the siege over, your final task is to return Hrormir’s Icestaff to the Mages Guild by placing it in Ontus Vanin’s safe.
Go to Ontus Vanin’s home on the other side of the Talos Plaza District, break in by picking the hard lock on the front door, and then the average lock leading to his quarters.
Put the Icestaff in Ontus Vanin’s chest in his room, and your task will be complete.
