Joining the Mages Guild in Oblivion Remastered is quite a process. You need to complete tasks at each Guild location across the land of Oblivion. This might take some time, but it’s worth it since joining the Guild is essential for enchanting your gear.
One of the crucial tasks for entering the Mages Guild is the Cheydinhal Recommendation Quest. This quest stands out within the storyline. Here’s a detailed guide to help you navigate it.
How to Start the Cheydinhal Recommendation Quest
To get started with the Mages Guild Quest, you’ll see markers guiding you to various Guild buildings throughout Cyrodiil. One of these points to Cheydinhal, located in the northeast part of the map, nestled between the Imperial City and Morrowind.
When you arrive in Cheydinhal, follow the marker to the Mages Guild, identifiable by a stained-glass eye emblem. If you enter via the West Gate, the Guild will be on your right, just past another building and near a statue.
Talk to Falcar
Inside the Guild, your first task is to talk to Falcar, the head of the Guild in Cheydinhal. Be prepared—he’s not exactly friendly and will ask you to retrieve a ring from a well. To access the well, you’ll first need a key from Deetsan.
This is how the Cheydinhal Recommendation Quest gets formally added to your journal.
Talk to Deetsan
You will also find Deetsan in the building. To get the key, you need to have a private conversation with her; do not let Falcar overhear, or she won’t give it to you. She’ll ask you to return when Falcar is not present.
Once Falcar has left, you can speak to Deetsan in secrecy. Not only will she hand over the key, but she will also teach you a spell called Buoyancy, allowing you to breathe underwater for 30 seconds.
Go to the Well
The well is located right behind the Mages Guild. Use the key to unlock it and dive in.
As soon as you enter, cast the Buoyancy spell because you’ll be underwater immediately. You can recast it while submerged, so as long as you have enough Magicka, you can stay underwater indefinitely.
After casting Buoyancy, swim into the chamber ahead and turn right. You’ll find a body in the water named Vidkun. Search the body and retrieve the Ring of Burden. This ring has no monetary value but weighs 150, which is likely to encumber you immediately.
If you weren’t using the Buoyancy spell, you would drown before escaping the well, just like Vidkun. Recast the spell if necessary and swim back to the exit.
Return to Deetsan
Moving slowly due to the weight, head back to the Mages Guild and find Deetsan to inform her about your findings. She will mention a disagreement with Falcar, who has since left. Deetsan will ask you to search Falcar’s room for anything suspicious, including a possible recommendation letter he might have left behind.
You can drop the Ring of Burden once you finish your conversation with Deetsan.
Search Falcar’s Room
Falcar’s room is located in the basement. After entering the basement’s main room, his room will be directly across from you. Inside, there are several items to investigate. But look for the drawer next to his bed, as it contains what you need.
It will be locked with an easy lock, so you can open it by lock-picking or using a spell like the Minor Latch Crack spell, which works perfectly for this.
Inside the drawer, you’ll find a Black Soul Gem. Once you collect this and search the rest of the room, you’ll be prompted to return to Deetsan and let her know you didn’t find a recommendation but did find the Black Soul Gem.
Return to Deetsan One Last Time
After leaving Falcar’s room, bring the Black Soul Gem back to Deetsan. She will take the gem from you and write you a recommendation for the Mages Guild University.
