Choosing your starting class is a crucial part of any RPG, and Tainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalon is no different. Spellcasting is a classic combat style, and if you focus on the right stats and skills, you can create a formidable sorcerer from the beginning.

Fortunately, you won’t have to dive into the game without a plan. We’re here to guide you in making smart choices right off the bat, ensuring you can start casting spells as soon as you exit your cell at the Island Asylum. Here’s everything you need to know to craft an effective mage build!

Top Starting Attributes for a Mage

While at the Island Asylum, speaking with the guard allows you to choose specific dialogue options that grant your character extra points in certain skills. This adds more roleplay depth and helps you begin shaping your ideal character.

Mages are skilled spellcasters, so look for the option that talks about visiting an ancient worship site. This choice will give you a boost in One-Handed, Light Armor, Magic, and Alchemy. After this, you can decide whether to explore healing magic or focus on destructive spells.

This choice helps define your role for storytelling but doesn’t dictate your character. Choosing a subclass is up to you, as both options support a solid mage build.

  • Druid Subclass

If you’re interested in healing magic, you’ll unlock the Blood Transfusion spell, which allows you to drain health from an enemy to replenish your own. This option also enhances your abilities in Alchemy and Cooking, letting you create meals that heal.

This path is ideal if you prefer alternative damage strategies and want to focus on defensive skills.

  • Caster Subclass

This option is perfect for those who aren’t afraid to get involved in the action. The increase in light armor lets you effectively use gear you find, while the Athletics skill aids your mobility.

The Burning Ember spell lets you launch fireballs at foes, dealing burn damage over time, making it a handy tool in early gameplay.

Before leaving the Island Asylum, you can collect both Blood Transfusion and Burning Ember spells, so your initial choice isn’t crucial unless you want to use both spells simultaneously.

Top Skills for Magic Development

To effectively build your magical abilities, prioritize investing your attribute points in Spirituality. This attribute is designed to boost your mana and spell power. Without these, you won’t reach your full potential as a caster.

You might also consider allocating points in the Practical branch to secure better prices when purchasing spells and crafting materials.

Furthermore, the Spirituality skill branch will be where you invest most of your points. Here, you can enhance your spell power with stacking skills and boost the effectiveness of wands and cubes in combat.

You can also improve your summoning abilities, combat effectiveness, and overall spellcasting skills in this area. The best build will depend on your personal spell preferences, but investing in general skills and buffs typically yields the best overall results.

Top Early Mage Equipment

Although there’s limited magical gear in the Island Asylum, you can still find some fantastic equipment for free. Notably, some of the best early enchanted mage gear can be obtained from Alisa, a kind woman in Kamelot who is working to open a boutique on the shore.

After completing a few quests to help her out, you can acquire two outfit sets designed to enhance your magical capabilities. Here’s what you can get, each of which can be upgraded to improve armor ratings while reducing their weight to nothing:
