Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon features an array of enigmatic characters and choices, but none quite like Caradoc. Discovered resting beneath a tree near the Shrine of a Forgotten God, this cloaked figure presents a pivotal choice: claim a remarkable artifact or receive an answer to one burning question. This decision feels significant, as it may influence your journey.
But what are the real implications? Is the artifact a worthy prize? Will the answers provide critical lore, insights, or enhance your gameplay? In this guide, we’ll explore what each choice entails, how to locate Caradoc, and other treasures waiting nearby.
Locating Caradoc
Starting from the beach where you initially awaken, follow the path to your west until you encounter a fork. Take the southern path towards the Gallows. After passing through the East Gate, keep heading north.
Tip: Watch out for enemies during your journey.
Continue along the trail above Blood Lake, keeping an eye out for a druidic shrine on your right. You’ll soon pass beneath some decorated ropes and skulls strung between two trees. At the next fork, take a right. Ahead, you’ll see a statue of a woman with a bow. Cross the stone stairs opposite this statue to find Caradoc lounging under the tree.
Tip: Interacting with the statue of the woman will boost your archery skills.
When you speak with Caradoc, select the line: “Aren’t you going to help me get Excalibur?” He will then offer you the choice to ask a question for truthful insights or to take the artifact. If you opt for “And now — safe travels,” the conversation will end, and Caradoc will disappear.
Questions and Answers
Asking Caradoc a question might seem appealing, but there’s a catch. If you choose “I’ll take the question,” you’ll be presented with six options. While Caradoc gives you a thorough answer, he will leave right after, and you’ll forfeit the opportunity to claim the artifact. Below are the details of each question and Caradoc’s responses.
Questions | Answers |
---|---|
"Who are you?" | "I was once a knight of the Round Table. Now, I hunt what remains of our king and attempt to mend the destruction he left behind." |
"How did you manage to survive?" | "This is the one question I cannot answer. Even if I could, you wouldn’t believe it. You’ll witness it soon enough." |
"Why do you hate King Arthur so much?" | "The Arthur I pledged loyalty to was a man, not a decaying corpse that mindlessly wreaks havoc for Avalon’s sake. The man I admired was a fabrication." |
"Why did you help me escape?" | "Many questions, yet you choose that one. The mastermind behind this plan is the high druid, Orrin, the last disciple of Merlin." |
"How can I get Excalibur?" | "That’s up to you to figure out. If it’s achievable, your best bet is to find Brendan, the captain of the Southern Horns." |
"Why do the Red Brothers torture people?" | "They believe it’s for the greater good, prioritizing the battle against the Red Death above all else." |
If You Choose the Artifact
Should you opt for the artifact, Caradoc will acknowledge your choice as wise, though he appears surprised. After a brief comment, he will vanish, leaving you with:
- Three Health Potions
- Two Sharpening Stones for enhancing your weapon
- One Menhir Figurine, a consumable that permanently boosts your max health by +5
Ultimately, which dialogue you choose won’t affect the overarching story or progression.
Note: While you’re at the Shrine of a Forgotten God, take the opportunity to explore the Lair of the Beast cave located just behind where Caradoc stood. Pass the beast’s corpse, and you’ll encounter a chest and The Questing Beast Egg.
Why Choose the Artifact
Opting for the artifact is the more advantageous choice. While Caradoc’s answers may delight those interested in lore, the stat boost from the artifact is simply too valuable to overlook. Given that there’s no significant benefit from choosing the question, picking the artifact is clearly a smart decision.
