During your adventure in the Oblivion Remastered main quest, you’ll frequently visit the twisting planes of Mehrunes Dagon’s realm, gathering peculiar glowing orbs known as Sigil Stones. The game doesn’t provide clear instructions on how to utilize these stones, which can lead to players overlooking them.
But don’t be quick to discard these glowing treasures! Sigil Stones are key for crafting powerful enchanted weapons and armor. In this guide, we’ll explore how to locate Sigil Stones, what makes them special, and how to maximize their potential.
Where to Find Sigil Stones
Sigil Stones are always located at the summit of a Sigil Keep, the main structure found within any Oblivion gate. These areas resemble treacherous dungeons, filled with fierce daedra and various deadly traps.
Climbing to the top of a Sigil Keep can be challenging, so make sure to bring plenty of potions and repair hammers for support!
The entrance to the Sigil Keep can often be concealed; thoroughly search the area for hidden passages, tunnels, or switches!
The peak of a Sigil Keep, known as the Sigillum Sanguis, is where you’ll discover the Sigil Stone. Be prepared, as the most formidable daedra will be waiting to attack as soon as you enter.
It’s best to either take them out one by one or rush for the Sigil Stone, which will close the Oblivion gate and send you back to Cyrodiil with a brief but spectacular light show.
How to Use a Sigil Stone
After acquiring a Sigil Stone and returning to Cyrodiil, you’ll find it in your inventory under the ‘miscellaneous’ tab. By selecting the Sigil Stone, you can access a unique enchantment menu that differs from the standard enchanting altar.
Instead of choosing a spell effect for your equipment or a soul gem for charging, the Sigil Stone comes with a set effect and doesn’t require gold or soul gems for enchanting.
Sigil Stones can be used anytime and anywhere, making them especially useful for characters who haven’t yet accessed the Arcane University.
The effect of each Sigil Stone is randomly generated from a list of spell effects, meaning each stone you find in a different playthrough may produce varying effects.
Each stone provides either damage or debuff effects for weapons, alongside defensive or buffing effects for armor, apparel, and jewelry. Make sure to think about what effect will best suit your build before choosing the gear to enchant!
Best Practices for Using Sigil Stones
Because Sigil Stones don’t cost gold or soul gems, they’re a fantastic option for low-level characters looking to obtain powerful enchanted items early in the game. However, the strength of the enchantments from the Sigil Stones depends on your level when you acquire them, identifiable by the stone’s name.
| Type | Player Level |
|---|---|
| Descendant Sigil Stone | Levels 1 – 4 |
| Subjacent Sigil Stone | Levels 5 – 8 |
| Latent Sigil Stone | Levels 9 – 12 |
| Ascendant Sigil Stone | Levels 13 – 16 |
| Transcendent Sigil Stone | Levels 17+ |
While some might argue that players should wait until they reach higher levels to hunt for Sigil Stones, as they provide the greatest potential at that point, higher-level players will also be able to create even more powerful enchantments with a wider range of effects.
At that stage, you’ll have gathered substantial gold and soul gems during your adventures, possibly making even the strongest Sigil Stones less impressive than what you could create on your own.
Unlike enchanting altars, which can combine multiple spell effects for greater results, Sigil Stones can only produce one effect at a time.
Thus, Sigil Stones should be seen as a tool for the early game, allowing you to create formidable gear better than what’s available from merchants. They are particularly beneficial for non-mage characters who might not yet have access to the various spell effects or Arcane University.
However, once you reach a level where you can craft daggers that inflict fire damage, absorb health, and paralyze all at once, the usefulness of Sigil Stones will start to diminish.
