In Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Sam’s backpack is more than just a cargo carrier; it’s his lifeline, alongside baby Lou. With various items, weapons, and tools at his disposal, the backpack remains a steadfast companion on his mission to connect Australia and Mexico to the Chiral Network. So, it’s only fitting that Sam can personalize it.
Sam’s backpack serves a purpose beyond just carrying items. You can customize it to suit your style, adding different components for new features. Here’s a straightforward guide on how to do it.
How to Customize Your Backpack
Customizing your backpack is easy. It can only be done in Sam’s private room. Once there, just check out the backpack on the wall and press ‘Square’ to access the customization menu.
Here, you can change the color of your backpack, decide where to place various patches, and create new components. Keep in mind that your backpack has limited space, so be selective about what you add.
How to Unlock New Backpack Colors
Your first customization option is changing the backpack’s color. While this doesn’t affect visibility like Sam’s outfit camo does, having a visually appealing backpack is still worthwhile since you’ll be seeing it throughout the game.
The color change is free and doesn’t require any materials or Chiral Crystals. Initially, your choices are limited, but each new connection level you achieve with The Artist prepper will unlock additional colors.
These colors can also be used for Sam’s outfit, BB’s pod, and Dollman’s suit.
How to Unlock New Backpack Patches and Components
Beyond colors, you can also customize your backpack with Patches and Components. Patches are purely decorative and occupy minimal space, while components introduce new functions and capabilities, thus taking up more room.
Here’s how to unlock them.
Patches
As expected, patches are all about aesthetics. They take up just one spot on the backpack. Most patches become available as you max out your connection level with different preppers, each offering a unique patch.
When customizing your backpack, focus on Components first, as patches are mainly for filling in any leftover space.
Components
Components shine when it comes to backpack customization. As you progress in the game and complete orders, you’ll unlock an array of components. These can take up significant space, so be sure to equip only the essential ones to avoid overloading your backpack.
This table will be updated with more backpack components as you advance.

Remember, however, you cannot store components for later; if they’re not equipped, they’ll be recycled automatically after customization.
