In the original *Death Stranding*, collecting materials to construct roads and other infrastructure was a key feature. In *Death Stranding 2: On The Beach*, the importance of these materials increases significantly as players work to restore even larger infrastructure systems.
While various facilities across Australia provide an abundance of materials, they will deplete rapidly once you engage in major restoration efforts. To meet the demands of these expansive projects, you’ll need to tap into mines for essential resources. However, incorporating these mines into the Chiral Network and transporting the materials involves significant challenges.
How to Utilize Mines
Mines are introduced early in the game and come in two types: small mines and large mines. Small mines are typically isolated, yielding fewer materials but requiring fewer Chiral Crystals to operate. In contrast, large mines cover more extensive areas and provide a wealth of resources, though they require a substantial amount of Chiral Crystals to function.
Moreover, larger mines are often equipped with a monorail, facilitating quicker material transport.
Before commencing mining, you’ll need to restore the mine itself, much like upgrading a structure or repairing a road. Simply gather the necessary materials to complete the restoration. If the mine is outside the Chiral Network, you must provide all the materials yourself. If it’s within the network, it might receive assistance from other players in its restoration.
After a mine is restored, you’ll need to provide Chiral Crystals to extract materials. This extraction process happens instantly, enabling you to receive all the materials at once. You cannot make partial contributions; it’s an all-or-nothing scenario for both small and large mines.
Mines also naturally generate materials over time, and using Chiral Crystals simply speeds up this process.
What Types of Materials Can Be Found in Mines?
Each mine offers a specific resource unique to the game, such as:
- Metals
- Ceramics
- Special Alloys
- Chemicals
- Resins
Each mine produces a designated material, and you cannot change its output. Therefore, it’s essential to locate the right mine if you want a consistent source of specific materials. In general, every material has two mines available, except for Chemicals, which only has one. For most other resources, you will find both small and large mines to choose from.
How to Transport Materials from Mines
Once you’ve collected materials from a mine, they must be transported elsewhere to be of any value. The method for doing this largely depends on your location. Despite Sam’s strength, he cannot carry an enormous amount of material on his own.
For larger mines, a nearby monorail can facilitate the rapid transport of materials directly to your private locker at any station along the track. This strategy allows for transporting heavy loads that would be nearly impossible to carry otherwise.
Monorails can also carry vehicles and regular cargo if you have deliveries to make along the route.
If a monorail isn’t available, your next best choice is a Pickup Off-Roader. While a Tri-cruiser is quick, it likely can’t handle the volume of materials from even a small mine. The Pickup Off-Roader, however, has ample cargo space and protects materials from Timefall during longer journeys.

Mines produce substantial quantities of materials, but they can be further improved. Just like PCC structures, mines can be upgraded, allowing them to provide even more materials while still requiring the same number of Chiral Crystals. Additionally, being connected to the Chiral Network enables other players to contribute materials toward upgrades, making the process more efficient.
Collecting Chiral Crystals
You might have noticed that mines demand a significant amount of Chiral Crystals, and obtaining enough can be challenging since you can’t gather them as easily as mine resources. Your primary sources of Chiral Crystals include defeating BTs, which drop crystals upon defeat. Additionally, tar pools around mines often house Chiral Crystals for collection.
