Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is still set to release later this year, and we might get a specific date during a rumored Nintendo Direct event coming up this month. There’s also speculation about what Retro Studios might focus on next.
Retro has mostly worked on Donkey Kong and Metroid Prime since it started, with a short break for a Mario Kart game on the Nintendo DS. With a new Metroid Prime game on the way, many fans are curious if Retro will develop another 2D Donkey Kong, especially since the character has gained popularity due to the recent Bananza game.
Metroid Prime 4 Beyond Studio Will Reportedly Start Metroid Prime 5 After Launch
Unfortunately for Donkey Kong fans, it seems that Retro will not be shifting to that franchise. According to insider Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, those hoping for a new Donkey Kong game after Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are mistaken. Reilly suggests it’s “unlikely Retro returns to Donkey Kong again.”
Reilly believes Retro’s skill in making Metroid Prime games is precisely why they won’t switch to a different franchise after Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. They even claim Retro could start working on Metroid Prime 5 right away after the release. However, Reilly doesn’t think Retro will be just known as “the Metroid Prime studio,” hinting they might explore a new game concept after Metroid Prime 5.
As with any claims from insiders, it’s good to take this information with caution. It makes sense that Retro is a unique Nintendo studio, and Nintendo probably wants them to create distinctive games instead of a Donkey Kong title that many other developers could also handle. This is disappointing for 2D Donkey Kong fans, but as Bananza has shown, there are plenty of other developers who can create great Donkey Kong games.
