After a month since the release of Mario Kart World, players are still figuring out their favorite character and kart combinations. Many are also trying to determine which techniques are worth practicing and which ones to skip. It seems that charged jumps often fall into the latter category, at least for the most part.
A new feature in Mario Kart World is the charged jump. This move is similar to the drift mechanic that has been a key part of the series. The main difference is that charged jumps are done while driving straight instead of during a turn.
Do Charged Jumps Provide a Boost or Slow You Down?
When you charge a jump, you might feel like you’re slowing down. If executed correctly, you should gain a boost, but many players argue otherwise. Research by Karting All Day (shared by Kotaku) confirms the doubts about charged jumps.
The video tests the speed of the same character in the same kart while driving normally versus using a charged jump. At the 1:04 mark, the character using the charged jump falls behind and fails to catch up to the normal racer, even after the supposed speed boost.
This shows that charged jumps do not help you speed up; in fact, they slow you down. However, don’t ignore this mechanic completely. Charged jumps can be useful for reaching rails and starting wall rides. Perhaps Nintendo intended charged jumps mainly as a transition to other new features.
Many players continue to discover new strategies even after a month of gameplay. Thanks to the internet, I’ve learned everything from dodging red shells with the feather to finding a Super Mario 64 easter egg that unlocks the mirror mode on the world map. These tips are something I might never have found if this game were released before the internet made sharing information so easy.
