Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
You will face many different enemies in this game. Some, like Wuchang herself, are infected with the Feathering disease and are severely affected. Others are human-shaped fighters who rely on their martial skills to challenge you.
The Rebel Background
The game features a backdrop of rebels fighting against the Ming Dynasty. In Cloudspire, you might encounter their leader, Ai Nengqi. He has sealed himself inside his tent and won’t let anyone in. When you finally face him, you’ll see why he’s so hard to defeat. You’ll find yourself returning to that tent often because Ai Nengqi is a tough opponent.
Preparation for Ai Nengqi
Ai Nengqi, the General of the North, is a strong opponent but beatable. He is quick to move around the battlefield, but when he stands still and attacks, his actions are slower and easier to read.
If you’ve been progressing well with certain allies, you can call on them during this fight. Nian Suichang can be summoned outside the fight area using a Bone Whistle. Keep the whistle in your quick slots if you plan to call him. He’s not very strong, but he will distract Ai Nengqi, giving you a chance to attack or recover.
Ai Nengqi uses various elements and can cause Frostbite, Burn, and Paralysis. Consider increasing your resistances beforehand. If you’re good at dodging, these effects might not be a big problem, but if you do get affected, it can make the fight harder. A moderate resistance to each is enough.
He switches rapidly between spells, weapon strikes, and martial attacks like punches and kicks. Defense techniques like deflecting might not always work against him. Since many of his attacks have long wind-ups, slower weapons and blocking can help, especially if you time your blocks well.
Ai Nengqi’s Strengths and Weaknesses
By the time you face him, Ai Nengqi is partly transformed. He’s no longer fully human, and he’s a giant of a man, which makes staggering him impossible. The only way to break his stance is to fully breach his Poise.
He’s skilled with various weapons, and can punch, kick, or cut with his large sword. His attacks include multiple damage types. He can also inflict status effects like Frostbite and Paralysis and, in his second phase, Burn. He resists these effects, so plan your attack types accordingly.
On the flip side, he’s vulnerable to many other status effects. Applying Corruption or Blight can quickly drain his health. Using Poise Breaks can stun him temporarily, giving you more chances to hit him. If you lack spells or skills with these effects, they are available in the Impetus Repository for use in Tempering.
If you prefer spells, utilize ones with Alacrity, such as the Echo of Lu Bingzhang. Ai Nengqi shows clear signs before attacks, making it easier to activate Alacrity and keep your distance from him.
Ai Nengqi’s Moveset
Ai Nengqi has two phases, with the second being an extension of the first. Here’s what he can do:
Phase One
- Massive Leap: He jumps and crashes down with his fist. Dodge into the attack as he prepares, then attack him as he recovers.
- Leaping Bow Shot: He leaps away and shoots a volley of electric arrows. Dodge after the flash, then rush at him because the arrows lodge in the ground and explode after a few seconds.
- Single Arrow Shot: From a distance, he fires one electric arrow, which he can do multiple times or stop at will. Dodge when you see the flash to avoid it and the explosion.
- Ice Cascade: He digs into the ground and releases a wave of ice that damages and obscures your view. Watch for a quick melee follow-up while your vision is blocked.
- Swinging Sword Combo: He swings his sword in large arcs multiple times. Use this chance to get behind him or prepare spells like Alacrity, or heal.
- Arrow Arc: He dodges away and unleashes a wider volley of weaker arrows; dodge and approach again.
- Punch and Slash: A quick combo of punches and sword strikes. Dodge and avoid since these melee attacks can’t be blocked or deflected.
Phase Two
- Arrow Rain: He aims and fires a barrage of arrows from above. Keep moving to avoid them, especially where the arrows will land.
- Flaming Sword Slash: He swings his flaming sword and flips around. These attacks cause Burn build-up. Dodge or get behind him.
- Fire Rain: He plants his flaming sword and causes fireballs to rain down. Stay moving to avoid.
- Heavy Slams: He slams his sword overhead repeatedly, dealing heavy damage. Dodge or get behind him to avoid damage, and use Alacrity if possible.
In the second phase, he relies more on status effects and attacks faster, but some combos remain slow enough for you to dodge and gain Skyborn Might or create space to heal.
How to Beat Ai Nengqi
The Battle
Ai Nengqi is surprisingly quick for his size mainly because of his movement. His actual attacks are relatively slow, so if you keep pace with his movement, avoiding the hits becomes easier.
The arena is large, allowing him to move around freely. His arrows are the hardest to dodge, since timing their firing is tricky. Focus on mastering your dodge timing and gradually whittle him down.
Using status effects makes the fight much easier. Poise Break can stun him, giving you a chance to land multiple hits. Applying Corruption can slowly drain his health.
Don’t forget, you can summon Nian to distract him. Summon him later in the fight so he can draw Ai Nengqi’s attention after you’ve worn him down a bit.
The Rewards
When you defeat Ai Nengqi, you receive four rewards:
- Seven Treasure Rosary: Can be given to Tao Qing in the Shu Sanctum for new purchases.
- Echo of Ai Nengqi Spell: Lets you use an electric bow that fires damaging arrows which explode after a delay.
- His Longsword, Flamebringer: A powerful weapon.
- White Jade Dumpling: An item reward.
Since Ai Nengqi is an optional boss, defeating him doesn’t affect the main story. However, it does progress Nian Suichang’s personal storyline.
