Destiny 2 has launched its first expansion of the Year of Prophecy, called The Edge of Fate. Fans noticed that some characters in this expansion sound different, such as Ikora Rey, who was originally voiced by Gina Torres. In The Edge of Fate, her voice resembles that of Savathun from The Witch Queen, voiced by Debra Wilson.
Bungie was unable to record voice lines with their usual group of voice actors during the production of The Edge of Fate. This was likely due to the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike, which focused on protecting performers from AI recreations of their voices.
As a result, several characters in Edge of Fate, including Ikora, Orin, and Chioma, do not have their original voice actors. Sometimes, characters are completely silent.
With the strike resolved, Bungie is now working on re-recording the voice lines for these characters.
Bungie Is Re-Recording Voice Lines
In a recent update, Bungie announced, “We are pleased to share that these issues have been resolved, and we’re actively re-recording lines for affected characters. While we do not have a specific date for when these lines will be updated, we aim for a future update. We will provide more details when available.”
The Edge of Fate is the first expansion for Destiny 2 under a new plan that features two major expansions each year rather than four seasons. The next expansion, called Renegades, is expected to be influenced by Star Wars, although it won’t be a direct crossover.
The SAG-AFTRA strike ended on June 18, and the union stated that important safeguards are now in place to protect actors from the misuse of AI to recreate their voices.
It’s still unclear whether this agreement will effectively prevent future exploitation of voice actors’ work.
Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate expansion is currently available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
