The Old Key is one of the special rewards available during the Festival in the prologue of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. You might be wondering what it unlocks, and you’ll find that on the entire Continent, this key opens just one hidden door, which you might easily overlook.
If you’re finishing up the game and curious about the Old Key’s purpose, or if you’re strategizing to ensure you don’t miss anything, this guide will help you locate where to use this Lumieran antique.
How to Obtain the Old Key
You can acquire the Old Key only during the Festival, on the night before Expedition 33 begins. This means your chance to get it is after the Gommage but before you leave Lumiere for good.
To obtain the Old Key, you need to exchange a Festival Token with Colette, who can be found in the rightmost tent wearing a blue dress and glasses. Gustave starts with one Token for free, and you can earn two more by engaging in Festival activities. You can earn Festival Tokens by:
- Answering all of Antoine’s lore questions correctly.
- Defeating Maelle in a duel.
You can attempt both tasks as many times as you like, so don’t stress about missing out on any Tokens or rewards from the tents.
Where to Use the Old Key
The Old Key doesn’t become relevant until midway through Act 2, so you might forget you even have it by then. The door it unlocks is located in Old Lumiere, which is your main focus in the first half of this Act.
Soon after entering Old Lumiere, your party will split up. You will initially control Lune, Sciel, and Monoco’s group, then switch to Maelle and Verso later. The door for the Old Key is on the route taken by Maelle and Verso.
If you’re revisiting Old Lumiere later in the game, use Expedition Flags to fast travel to Left Street. This will place you at the beginning of Maelle and Verso’s path, allowing you to follow the directions below easily.
From the Left Street Flag, follow the path until you pass through a ruined doorway. Look for a path on the right that leads to a large, broken pipe sticking out of the crumbling street.
Jump into the hole in the pipe and look back; the gate that the Old Key unlocks will be right there inside it.
What Do You Receive for Using the Old Key?
Behind the gate is a Journal from the early days of the Fracture, making it the oldest Journal available in the game. If you don’t purchase the Old Key from Colette, this is the only way to get it. After collecting the Journal, you can interact with the chroma at the pipe’s edge to create a rope and climb back out.
