Five years ago, before Baldur’s Gate 3 was officially released, Larian Studios’ publishing director, Michael ‘Cromwelp’ Douse, had a few too many drinks at a bar and wrote the release date on a whisky bottle. It would have been a strange leak if someone had discovered it, but no one did.
According to GamesRadar+, Douse thinks it’s lucky that this careless act slipped by, as it could have led to problems for him and the studio. He tweeted, “In retrospect, it’s funny and not a legal issue. Maybe I did it again? Who knows.” This makes me wonder if other developers do similar things. Should I be looking through whisky bottles in bars across the U.S. for the release date of Half-Life 3? But I value my health too much for that.
But It’d Have Been The Wrong Baldur’s Gate 3 Release Date
Many people noted that even if someone had found the bottle and recognized it as being from a Larian developer, it wouldn’t have been the right date anyway.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was launched early on PC to avoid competing with Starfield, which was expected to be a huge release. However, the PS5 version was delayed to September 6, and the Xbox version was pushed back even further to December 7. Whatever Douse wrote five years ago would not have reflected these last-minute changes.
Regardless, it’s a fun story and feels like an odd conspiracy you’d expect to hear among fans waiting for Silksong. Who knows? Maybe Team Cherry has hidden the release date in a bottle somewhere too, and while fans analyze every little clip from events, there’s a bottle in a bar waiting to spill the beans. Probably not, but every hopeful fan can dream.
