Among all the quests in Hollow Knight: Silksong, the Rite of the Pollip stands out as one of the most challenging to find. There are six locations in the dense Shellwood that you need to explore, and keeping track of your progress can be difficult due to the area’s obscurity.
Thankfully, this quest rewards you with a special charm that can significantly change your game experience. While Greyroot doesn’t fully explain what the right is or what it does, the main goal is to earn a 100% achievement and collect the charm for your collection.
How to Start the Rite of the Pollip Quest
You can begin this quest inside Shellwood. Before starting, it’s highly recommended to have the Shellwood map. The location where you obtain this map depends on your initial entry into Shellwood:
- If you came from the Wormways before passing through Greymoor, buy the map at Shakra’s shop in Greymoor, east of the Far Fields entrance.
- If you entered Shellwood from Bellhart, head to the west exit from the first Shellwood bench near Bellhart, take the elevator down, then go through the bottom-left exit to find Shakra selling the map there.
The Shellwood map costs 70 Rosary.
Meeting Greyroot
With the map, visit Greyroot at her home on the west side of Shellwood. To reach her for the first time:
- Travel west from the east Shellwood bench.
- Go as far left as possible in the next room, taking the top-left exit (not the ground-level one).
- Enter her house at the end of this room.
Greyroot will ask you to fetch six purple pollips. Accept the quest to start collecting pollip hearts.
Note: You can collect all six pollip hearts before talking to Greyroot, which can slightly shorten the quest duration.
Locating Pollip Hearts
Pollip Hearts are found on purple flowers you might have seen while exploring Shellwood. To get a heart, strike the purple flower three times to destroy it.
Remember these key points about pollip hearts:
- Many are guarded by aggressive wood wasps, which attack as you try to collect the hearts.
- You will need to defeat Sister Splinter to complete this quest.
- The Cling Grip upgrade, obtained after defeating Sister Splinter, is necessary for the last three pollip hearts.
- You can find the hearts in any order, but they do not respawn after being destroyed.
Locations of Specific Pollip Hearts
-
First Heart: Located in a room just after the Sister Splinter boss fight. To access it without Cling Grip, start in the room two exits west of Bellhart, climb up, and reach the vines and wasps on the east wall, then find the flower in the top right corner.
-
Second Heart: In a central alcove near the east bench, reachable by jumping onto white flowers in a small, enemy-free room from the top-left exit of the east bench area. The Hunter’s crest helps here for precise jumps.
-
Third Heart: Found immediately after the Sister Splinter fight, in the next room to the left. Jump down and to the left after the fight to discover the flower in a small alcove.
-
Fourth Heart: Located behind a breakable vine wall, accessible by climbing the right wall from the east bench area. Drop off the ledge, destroy the vine, and follow the tunnel down.
-
Fifth Heart: Once you have Cling Grip, go to the area above and past the splinterbarks near Herrah’s statue. Destroy the wood wasps nest at the pool’s end to reveal a hidden tunnel leading to the pollip.
-
Sixth Heart: Accessible from the east bench by jumping onto the right wall, climbing up, and destroying a vine wall in the next room to reveal the final pollip.
Rewarding Completion
After collecting all six pollip hearts, return to Greyroot. Hand over the hearts and wait for her to finish her task. She will reward you with the Pollip Pouch, which infuses venom into your tools. Venom causes additional damage, dealing ticks of damage on contact and after a brief delay, making it particularly effective against tough enemies like bosses and wraiths in the Mist.
This charm enhances trap-based builds, so obtaining the Pollip Pouch early can make your gameplay more effective, justifying the effort needed to complete this challenging quest.
