As you dive into Umamusume: Pretty Derby, you’ll quickly discover that a significant part of your experience revolves around training your characters in the career mode. After completing a career run, your progress is saved, allowing you to use that character in other modes like story or team trials.

To compete effectively in team trials, it’s essential to continuously train your characters and improve their overall performance. However, this can be quite complex, especially if you’re unsure of the best strategies to employ.

Understanding Legacy and Support Cards

When you start Umamusume: Pretty Derby, the career option is located in the bottom right corner of the home screen. This section takes you to training mode, where you first select a character to train. Each character has a tier rating that indicates their performance on different tracks, race distances, and strategies.

It’s beneficial to have a top-tier trained Umamusume for each distance and one specifically for dirt tracks. Before selecting a character for training, assess your team in the team trial races to determine which type is most needed. After deciding on a character, you’ll also need to select their legacy and support cards before starting your training.

If you look up to high-level players, borrowing their legacy and support cards can be highly beneficial.

However, borrowing a legacy from another player does require some of your in-game currency.

First, you need to select two legacy characters. After completing a career run with an Umamusume, they become available as legacy characters. Essentially, the more runs you complete, the stronger your legacy pool will be, enhancing your overall rating. The legacy system introduces progression to the game.

Different legacies provide various stat boosts, and some even increase a character’s tier rating for specific tracks, distances, or strategies. Choosing the right stats is crucial; for instance, if you want to excel in Sprint distance, prioritize Speed stats.

After selecting your legacy, the next step is picking the right support cards. Each support card is linked to specific stats, shown in the upper left corner of the card. They can unlock various skills for your character during the run and offer hints for acquiring these skills more cost-effectively.

Once again, it’s essential to choose cards that align with your desired stats and obtain skills suited to your targeted distance and strategy.

Fundamentals of Character Training

To effectively train your character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, it’s vital to grasp all the options available on the training screen. You’ll need to pay attention to these details, although the level of focus required may differ depending on your progress in the run. Here’s a breakdown of key elements on the training screen:

Type

Description

Turns Left

The number of turns remaining for your next goal is shown at the top left of the screen. Keeping track of this is crucial for making informed decisions as you approach your next significant race. If you’re one turn away with low energy, it’s better to rest, as failing training can negatively impact your character’s mood, affecting race performance.

Goal

Your current goal appears to the right of the turns left icon, displaying your next race along with criteria to meet, often related to fan count. If you lack fans for a race, consider participating in random races to boost your numbers.

Training and Stats

Your current stats and main training option are visible below your Umamusume. Engaging in training will enhance these stats, and support characters may provide buffs to your training. Each stat level-up can also grant points to other stats, so keep your focus in mind.

Skill Points

Winning races and participating in random events during your run awards skill points, which can be used to acquire various skills. Ensure that you upgrade your skills when it’s most beneficial.

Rest, Infirmary, and Recreation

The top of your screen displays your character’s energy and mood. If either is low, engage in Rest or Recreation to improve them. Taking part in these activities consumes a whole turn, but random events may occur that can enhance your stats, such as boosting mood while resting or replenishing energy during recreation.

Current Year

Each training career spans three years, and you can see the current year right above your turns left section. The years progress as follows: Junior Year, Classic Year, and Senior Year.

Full Stats

The full stats option, located above your skill points, allows you to review negative effects on your characters, their impacts, and all current skills.

Keep an eye on each menu and carefully select your path, as a training run can be derailed by a few poor choices.

Understanding Key Events

Throughout your character’s training, various events will recur, offering buffs and occasionally penalizing your character by lowering their mood or stats and inflicting negative effects. You’ll notice some events happening consistently in every run, while others depend on your support cards.

Among the recurring events, several important ones deserve your attention, regardless of your racing goals. Here’s a summary:

Training Upgrades

When you engage in a specific training type and have the director as your support, she will elevate that training type, enhancing the stats gained from it.

It’s crucial to secure as many upgrades as possible for desired training types early on.

Summer Break

The summer break occurs at the beginning of July in both Classic and Senior Years, lasting for four turns. During this time, all training is boosted, allowing for significant stat increases.

It’s advisable to maximize your character’s energy just before the break to make the most of these upgrades.

Inspiration

This can activate at certain points during your run and essentially provides substantial stat boosts and skills rooted in your legacy cards. It’s wise to hold off on upgrading skills until after these inspirations.

G1 Races

In the final year, you’ll have opportunities to compete in G1 random races, which can increase your fan base by over 40,000 if you secure first place. Participating in these events is important for maximizing fan count.

Yearly Training Guide

Now that you grasp the essentials of training in Umamusume: Pretty Derby and the events to monitor, it’s vital to have a roadmap for what to focus on during your training, which will vary significantly by year:

Junior Year Strategy

At the start of your journey, your primary goal is to participate in the Junior Debut race. Focus on upgrading your support cards over stat enhancement. Seek out trainings that feature two or more support cards in the upper right section. Aim for as many cards as possible to reach the gold bar.

Hitting the gold bar allows support cards to offer a rainbow training opportunity.

If you encounter a day with no suitable training options and your energy falls below half, do not hesitate to rest for better choices.

Classic Year Strategy

During this year, alongside the significant events, your focus shifts to enhancing stats. Strive to push the most crucial stats to at least a B or A rating before the year concludes, preparing yourself well for future challenges. Aim for high rankings in all career races during this stage.

This is also when you can start acquiring some skills for your character once your first Inspiration occurs.

Senior Year Strategy

In the final chapter, concentrate on fully upgrading your key stats and gradually acquiring all necessary character skills. Engage in G1 races whenever possible to elevate your fan count and gain additional skill points.
