Borderlands 4 introduces four all-new Vault Hunter classes, each with their own unique abilities, skills, and perks. While the Siren remains a familiar face, the Forgeknight, Gravitar, and Exo-Soldier all bring fresh tricks to the table. Though some elements might feel familiar, there’s plenty of new skills to master.
Every character starts with a few Action Skills to select from, along with a variety of passive perks found in their skill trees. This allows players to customize their Vault Hunter and experiment with different builds and gameplay styles. Here’s a quick overview of the four characters confirmed for Borderlands 4 so far:
When the game launches on September 12, players will be able to choose from these four classes:
- Amon the Forgeknight
- Harlowe the Gravitar
- Rafa the Exo-Soldier
- Vex the Siren
At the start, you pick one of these characters, then level up as you play. You unlock new Action Skills and perks that enhance their abilities. Each Vault Hunter has three Action Skills to choose from, each with its own skill trees filled with passive perks and upgrades that suit different play styles.
While you can only equip one Action Skill at a time, you can switch between them freely, giving you the flexibility to try out different setups. You can also modify your builds by changing Augments, Capstone abilities, or even respec your skill trees at designated locations—much like in earlier Borderlands games.
All Vault Hunters feature a unique passive perk called a Vault Hunter Trait, which offers a little extra boost, along with a set of movement abilities like sprinting, sliding, dashing, double-jumping, climbing, gliding, and grappling.
Amon the Forgeknight appears to be a melee-focused tank who can block damage with his shield and charge into combat with elemental melee attacks. He’s shown wielding two axes and a giant hammer. As the last survivor of a cult that worshiped Vault monsters, he vows to fight back against these creatures through poetic speech—likely in iambic pentameter instead of typical Borderlands dialogue.
Harlowe the Gravitar uses gadgets and gravity-based abilities to trap and damage enemies. She deploys bubbles and gadgets similar to Maya’s Phaselock, but with a focus on gravity disruption. Formerly a Maliwan scientist, she brings a variety of elemental tech to her fights.
Rafa the Exo-Soldier seems to be a combat-focused class utilizing advanced exo-suits and Tediore’s digistruct tech. He can wield multiple weapons, slice enemies with high-energy knives, and use a powerful energy pistol. Born and raised in microgravity, Rafa underwent surgery to fit into an exo-suit, making him a formidable but fleeing soldier turned Vault Hunter.
Vex the Siren uses phase energy to cause chaos. She’s a tough, sarcastic character who’s committed to helping the oppressed. Her special trait, Phase Covenant, lets her convert all damage from Action Skills and melee into the element of her current gun. Her Action Skills include creating damaging phase explosions that heal her, summoning a large feline friend named Trouble that buffs her, and an as-yet-unnamed third skill involving a scythe-wielding ghost of herself.
Each character offers a different style of play, and players will have the freedom to adapt their builds, switch skills, and experiment with different strategies as they progress through the game.
