The latest Elderwood expansion for Palia introduces a wealth of new elements, including a vast new territory to discover. As part of the primary storyline, you’ll gain access to various potions from the elusive Majiri potion-master, Tamala. Each potion will be essential for navigating the perils of the Elderwood, but first, you’ll need to complete specific quests before Tamala will offer them—most notably, the Hearth Potion, which requires rare components.
Potions are just one aspect of the new gameplay mechanics added in this expansion. Together with relics, they provide temporary boosts to help you confront the unique wildlife in the area. You can find Tamala’s potion shop at the Central Stables in Palia’s new Elderwood region, where she sells potions, runestones, pumpkin seeds, and sacred flowers. The shop is easy to locate, especially after acquiring your own stable, with all items priced in Infected Essence rather than gold.
How to Begin the Quest “Where the Hearth Is”
Tamala Wants to Make Amends for Trapping You
The quest titled “Where the Hearth Is” extends the previous main narrative, where Tamala confined you in a cave as punishment for tracking her. After you rescue Ulfe and chat with Subira, the main questline halts, but if you find Tamala in the world, she’ll have a quest marker. When you talk to her, she will express remorse for her earlier actions and propose a way to make up for it.
Tamala will reveal that she can brew a potion that will instantly teleport you to your home lot. However, just as with her previous Elderwood potion, she requires the initial ingredients to be gathered. The Hearth Potion offers a quick method to return to your home plot when the standard return option on your map is unavailable.
Tamala’s Teleportation Potion Requires Four Ingredients
Star Quality Ingredients Can Be Challenging to Find
To create the Hearth Potion, you’ll need four ingredients; however, three of these must be of star quality. This makes them rare drops, often sourced from generally common or abundant resources, meaning your success in completing the quest will depend on your luck with drop rates. For this new teleportation potion, Tamala will require 300 Infected Essence, one star-quality Ogopuu Scale, one star-quality Blushing Batterfly, and one piece of star-quality Elder Clam Mushroom Meat.
Where to Gather Infected Essence
The easiest component to collect is Infected Essence, located abundantly in the Elderwood. You can find it as floating orbs of purple energy or gathered from infected plants and animals. It’s simpler to collect Infected Essence from materials in the Elderwood, so stock up on Elderwood Potions or use a Bag of Illusion relic.
Collecting 300 pieces of Infected Essence requires time; however, with just the basic Bag of Illusion, you can gather from infected flora. This method will yield optimal results and provide additional crafting materials. Otherwise, you can buy Elderwood Potions from Tamala’s shop for 15 Infected Essence each.
Where to Source Starred Elder Clam Mushroom Meat
The star-quality Elder Clam Mushroom Meat is relatively straightforward to gather, although it may take several tries to find the right quality. Elder Clam Mushrooms are scattered throughout the Okanaa Bog region and are identifiable by their light pink hue and green-tipped caps. These mushrooms are plentiful and tend to respawn quickly, allowing for easy collection.
To perform secondary actions on an item, such as opening a bag, sticker pack, or oyster, right-click if you’re on a PC or press X on the Switch.
To extract the meat from the Elder Clam Mushroom, access your inventory and open the mushroom the same way you would an oyster. This will yield Elder Clam Mushroom Meat, which can be of star quality or even include a Black Pearl. It took me numerous attempts before securing a star-quality piece of meat, as the drop rate is around 10%.
Where to Spot a Starred Blushing Batterfly
You can find Blushing Batterflies in the cave regions of the Elderwood; I had the most success in the Red Blossom Cave. These pale pink insects appear almost white in-game, and star-quality insects in Palia have a subtle glow, making the starred Blushing Batterflies easier to see in dim environments.
The Blushing Batterfly is also quite fast and flits around when startled, making them hard to catch. I recommend using Sticky Smoke Bombs to slow them down. You can craft these using one piece of clay, a fabric piece, and a Sweet Leaf.
Where to Find a Starred Ogopuu Scale
The hardest ingredient to find is the star-quality Ogopuu Scale, which is a rare drop from only the blue Ogopuu. Ogopuu are commonly found near water in Mitana Grove, the Deep Woods, and primarily in Okanaa Bog. When threatened or attacked, Ogopuu will spit a sticky substance at you that slows your movement, making them tricky to chase. Therefore, I highly recommend hunting with a partner or in a group.
You can craft 20 Fine Arrows using five pieces of Heartwood and one Iron Bar. Heartwood can be found in Bahari Bay from Pine Trees in Palia.
You’ll need at least level six in hunting to access a Fine Bow or higher and to craft Fine Arrows in Palia. These arrows will inflict maximum damage and minimize the number of shots needed to take down each Ogopuu. Once you’ve gathered all your ingredients, return to Tamala, who will reward you with a Hearth Potion and one Red Candy Egg, granting you 250 Focus when consumed.
