While there are eight weapons scattered throughout the game, six are completely optional and require you to go out of your way to find them. It’s unlikely you’ll pick them up by accident.

Pistol
Saga starts her journey with the Service Pistol already holstered. It’s quick to aim and fairly accurate, perfect for hitting weak spots on some enemies. Remember to gather as many hidden lunch boxes as possible to earn upgrade fragments, especially the “More Bullets” upgrade, which increases magazine size by 50%.

Sawed-Off Shotgun
During the second Saga chapter, “Return 2 – The Heart,” you’ll find this shotgun in the Cauldron Lake General Store after a Taken crashes through a wall. Crossbow
You’ll find the crossbow in Watery during “Return 3 – Local Girl.” It’s a powerful, slow-to-fire long-range weapon. You’ll access it after exploring the town and finding an old cabin along the road. Outside, near a cult stash, is where you’ll find the bolts and the crossbow.
Hunting Rifle
This rifle becomes available later, during “Return 5 – Old Gods,” at the Wellness Center. It’s easy to miss as it’s tucked away in an inaccessible room. Its high damage makes it worth the effort to retrieve and upgrade.
Pump-Action Shotgun
In the sixth chapter, “Return 6 – Scratch,” the shotgun is stored in Sheriff Tim Breaker’s locked office at the Bright Falls Sheriff’s Station. You’ll get the key after visiting the morgue. Inside Tim’s office, the shotgun is in a locked case on the wall. This larger shotgun is a great upgrade from the sawed-off version and a must-have for tougher fights.

Alan can carry and upgrade three weapons, two of which you receive during the main story. However, one is easy to overlook and becomes essential as difficulty increases.

Flashlight and Revolver
Early in Alan’s chapter, “Initiation 2 – Casey,” you’ll find the flashlight and revolver after escaping the Talk Show Studio and venturing into the Dark Place. Look for an alleyway marked by a green neon. A cutscene will introduce you to this classic combo, which you’ll need to upgrade by finding Words of Power to increase the revolver’s strength.
Flare Gun
Near the end of “Initiation 4 – We Sing,” you’ll find the flare gun on a wooden desk with a red top in the Talk Show Studio. It’s well-hidden but hard to miss. Limited in ammo, it’s excellent for clearing groups of enemies and big crowds. This weapon is especially fun during the more complex missions.
Double-Barreled Shotgun
This powerful shotgun is easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. During “Initiation 5 – Room 665,” you’ll need to explore the Oceanview Hotel, solving environmental puzzles and eventually reaching a rooftop with a locked bar. The shotgun is nearby, in a locked room accessible after obtaining a key from the hotel’s puzzle. It’s a significant upgrade for tougher enemies.
