Food plays a vital role in Hytale, much like in many survival games. When you start, you’ll encounter items such as Wild Berries and Raw Wildmeat, which are likely the first foods you’ll eat. Instead of filling a hunger meter, these foods restore your health and provide useful buffs.
However, relying solely on Wild Berries and raw meat isn’t sustainable for long. As you progress and undertake lengthy adventures, you’ll want better options that restore more health. It’s time to cook up some tastier meals using the Chef’s Stove, like a delicious Apple Pie.
How To Cook Meals
The earliest way to cook food is with a Campfire, which you can craft from your inventory or any Workbench with four Sticks and one Rubble. Cooking on the Campfire allows you to prepare simple dishes such as Cooked Wildmeat or Roast Vegetables using Wood, Sticks, or Charcoal as fuel.
Upgrading to a Chef’s Stove requires crafting at a Workbench with two Copper Ingots, ten Tree Logs, and six Stones. Placing the Stove unlocks a wider variety of recipes across three categories: Prepared, Baked, and Ingredient.
Until you find potions, eating cooked food is your best method to boost health. Most basic foods instantly restore at least 5% of your health and give various buffs like Health Regen I or Stamina Regen I.
How to Eat Food
To eat, select an item from your hotbar and press the Secondary Action button. It takes a few seconds to consume, and actions such as climbing or taking damage can interrupt the process. You can eat multiple food items during battle to keep restoring health, but buffs won’t stack. The duration resets if the same buff is reapplied or replaced by a stronger version.
Benefits of Cooking
Cooking meals increases their effectiveness. Cooked foods generally take more ingredients but provide more immediate health restoration, making them more useful during fights. They often also offer better buffs that last longer. For example:
- Baked meals like Apple Pie and Pumpkin Pie provide a combination of Health Regen III and Stamina Boost III, plus extra buffs.
- Common early-game cooked foods include Skewers and Salads, made from easily farmed ingredients, ideal until you unlock higher-tier recipes like Apple Pie from an Apple Tree.
