Ball x Pit is a roguelite brick-breaking game with light base-building features. Your goal is to upgrade balls, unlock new characters, and gradually descend into a pit that gets harder with each level. You can choose from a variety of characters, balls, and strategies as you play.
Progression is simple, but this guide will highlight key strategies, such as which buildings to prioritize, how to unlock new blueprints, and the best character and ball combos.
Characters, Ball Fusion, and Evolution
Some gameplay mechanics can help you succeed in Ball x Pit.
Each character starts with a unique ball. For example, The Warrior begins with the Bleed ball, while The Achy Finger starts with Burn. Characters also have special traits, which are unlocked by completing levels and building their house blueprints.
Note: You need to build character houses at your base. We’ll explain base-building later.
All Characters in Ball x Pit
Here’s a list of the characters:
Character | Trait |
---|---|
The Warrior | No unique trait |
The Achy Finger | Shoots twice as fast, scatters aim, moves at full speed while shooting, with Burn starting ball |
The Repentant | Balls bounce and deal 5% more damage each bounce; hitting the back wall damages enemies passing through |
The Embedded | Balls always pierce enemies until hitting walls |
The Cogitator | Automatically selects upgrades |
The Cohabitants | Launches mirrored copies of each ball at half damage |
The Shade | Balls shoot from the back with a 10% base critical chance |
The Empty Nester | Shoots multiple instances of one equipped special ball; no baby balls |
The Shieldbearer | Uses a shield to bounce balls back; balls deal more damage with each bounce |
The Spendthrift | Shoots all balls simultaneously in a wide arc |
The Makeshift Sisyphus | Increases AoE and status damage significantly, but balls no longer deal direct hit damage |
The Flagellant | Balls bounce off the bottom of the screen normally |
The Physicist | Gravity affects balls, pulling them toward the back of the screen |
The Juggler | Lobs balls into the air toward a target; bouncing starts on hitting the ground |
The Radical | Plays the game and automatically chooses upgrades |
Best Characters
Different characters excel depending on their starting balls and traits. Successful players favor characters like:
- The Achy Finger — because Burn is a powerful starting ball.
- The Flagellant — as bouncing off the bottom can double damage output.
- The Cogitator — since it automatically selects upgrades, often making good choices.
Experiment with different characters. When you unlock the Matchmaker blueprint, you can bring two characters into a run, helping you plan early evolutions like combining Burn and Freeze for tougher levels.
Ball Evolution and Fusion
Two level-3 balls with potential evolutions can be combined to upgrade their power. A full list of possible ball evolutions is available. Planning your evolutions helps you strengthen your balls and free up slots for new ones.
You can also fuse any two level-3 balls, regardless of whether they’ve evolved. For example, fusing a Cell level 3 with a Vampire Lord level 3 creates a Vampire Lord that splits into multiple copies. These combinations can become very strong.
Progression and Base Building
Progression involves collecting blueprints for new buildings and constructing them at your base. Buildings cost resources like wheat, wood, stone, and gold. You need to manually send characters to build by bouncing off them.
Best Buildings to Build First
Prioritize new character houses, which unlock additional character options and strategies. Also, focus on resource-generating buildings like wheat fields and forests. Send characters on resource harvests between runs — more harvests can help gather resources faster, although late in the game, the benefit of multiple harvests is limited.
Building Layout
A simple layout works best: place resource buildings near the middle, surrounded by other structures. This setup keeps bumping characters contained within a large perimeter, reducing the chance they’ll get stuck between small areas or buildings.
How to Beat Each Level
Levels grow increasingly difficult as you descend deeper into the pit. You may encounter spikes in difficulty. To cope, choose characters that complement the level’s challenges, and upgrade them through specific buildings (for example, buildings that boost Intelligence increase baby ball damage). Using a mixture of area damage (AoE) and single-target attacks is essential for defeating bosses.
Each level has three bosses: two stage bosses and a final boss. After defeating the first two, you’ll earn a Fusion upgrade. Timing your upgrades for level-3 balls allows you to fuse or evolve them after the boss fights, creating more powerful combinations.
Important Tips
- Don’t forget about passive abilities. Combining passives, like crit damage bonuses, with strong balls is very effective.
- Focus on maintaining a balance between evolving your balls and freeing up space for new ones.
- Keep an eye on your upgrades, especially after bosses, to maximize your ball strength before progressing further.
