Among the many intriguing and enigmatic foes in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the Petank puzzle-type enemies stand out as some of the most captivating—and at times, quite challenging. Petanks resemble small glowing orbs and can be found darting around various maps. Your task is to chase these orbs down and place them on a specific platform before engaging with them for valuable rewards. Typically, Petanks will yield useful items such as upgrade materials and Recoat, which allows players to rework a character’s skills or attributes.
While exploring the diverse locations within Clair Obscur, you might spot unusual platforms on the ground that indicate a Petank is nearby. These platforms shine with colors that match the Petank. It’s crucial to locate and capture the Petank, as you’ll need to maneuver it onto its designated platform before you can attack. Keep in mind that you have a limited number of turns during combat before the Petank escapes, meaning you may have to revisit or load an old save to face it again.

How Petank Puzzle Enemies Function In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Chasing Down Petanks & Understanding Their Weaknesses Can Be Quite a Challenge
If you’re looking to gather materials for upgrading weapons in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the Petank enemies are a fantastic source. However, you can only engage these luminous orbs once they are on their designated platform, a circular stone area that sparkles in the same hue as the Petank. You’ll need to cleverly plan your approach, adjusting your direction based on where the Petank is located.
Upon successfully getting them onto their platform, you can initiate combat. During these skirmishes, each Petank will typically have only three turns to stay before escaping. You can extend this time through various strategies, like breaking their defenses or countering their strikes. Although each Petank has a shared set of attacks, their defensive attributes and vulnerabilities will vary, so you need to determine the most effective way to deplete their health quickly before they vanish.
If you’re having trouble getting a Petank to its platform, consider approaching from a different angle. Sometimes, a more indirect route is necessary.
If a Petank escapes before you can defeat it, don’t fret. You can either revert to a prior save or rest at an Expedition Flag, which resets the Petank. Keep in mind that some may have substantial shields or unusually high health and defense stats. In various encounters, different methods can delay them. For instance, counterattacks can surprise certain Petanks, preventing their escape. Keep in mind that defeating Petanks won’t always be straightforward, as they become increasingly difficult as you progress into Acts 2 and 3.

Chromatic Petank |
After defeating Petanks, you’ll receive upgrade materials like Recoat, Colour of Lumina, or Chroma Catalysts that can enhance your weapons to various levels. Entering NG+ will grant superior versions of Chroma Catalysts, allowing you to upgrade your weapons to Level 33.
The Chromatic Petank is a special variant that summons additional Petanks and absorbs their health upon fleeing. It rewards players with the unique Anti-Stun Pictos and unlocks the Carreau Parfait Achievement/Trophy.
You won’t be able to fully upgrade any weapons until you reach the later stages of NG+. There are five types of Chroma Catalyst upgrade Tints dropped by Petanks based on your progress in the game. Each type is designated for upgrading weapons to a particular level.
These include Chroma Catalyst (Level 3), Polished Chroma Catalyst (Level 9), Resplendent Chroma Catalyst (Level 19), Grandiose Chroma Catalyst (Level 32), and Perfect Chroma Catalyst (Level 33). Attaining Level 33 significantly boosts weapon damage, making Perfect Chroma Catalysts crucial for the endgame, especially against tough bosses like Simon in The Abyss. Overall, Petanks serve as an excellent source of upgrade materials essential for tackling some of the tougher foes in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
