Avowed Character Customization and Backgrounds
Avowed continues Obsidian’s tradition of offering players a wealth of choices in role-playing, starting with its character creator. This feature allows for extensive customization options, letting you shape your character’s identity and appearance.
One of the most significant decisions during character creation is selecting a background. This choice sets the foundation for many of your character’s interactions in the game, so it’s crucial to pick one that resonates with your vision.
What Is a Character Background?
Your character’s background in Avowed helps outline their early life and provides distinctive dialogue options throughout the game. Players can select from five unique backgrounds:
- Arcane Scholar
- Court Augur
- Noble Scion
- Vanguard Scout
- War Hero
Each background provides specific dialogue opportunities identified by the background name during interactions. Additionally, they influence the initial distribution of your Attribute Points and determine the first weapon you will find.
Note: You will discover more weapons early in the game, so the starting weapon is generally of limited significance.
While each background has set Attribute Points, you can adjust their distribution to suit your preferences during character creation and can further modify them later on.
Regardless of your chosen background, you will have access to every weapon and ability in the game.
Arcane Scholar
Characters with the Arcane Scholar background are highly educated. They have completed an academic program, published controversial works, and gained admission to the Imperial Court.
Starting Attributes:
- Might: 2 (6% damage bonus; +20% carrying capacity)
- Constitution: 0 (no health bonuses)
- Dexterity: 2 (7% attack speed; 13% action speed)
- Perception: 2 (6% critical hit chance; 10% max range)
- Intellect: 3 (15 max essence; 18% elemental resist)
- Resolve: 1 (5 max stamina; 12% second wind efficiency)
This background enhances magical potential without bolstering survivability.
Court Augur
Court Augurs possess keen insight and fortune-telling abilities. If your character embodies a figure who thrives in secrecy and gains power subtly, this background suits you well.
Starting Attributes:
- Might: 0
- Constitution: 0
- Dexterity: 2 (7% attack speed; 13% action speed)
- Perception: 3 (9% critical hit chance; 15% max range)
- Intellect: 3 (15 max essence; 18% elemental resist)
- Resolve: 2 (10 max stamina; 23% second wind efficiency)
Ideal for builds focusing on stamina and Essence, the Court Augur is perfect for nimble characters who utilize ranged attacks.
Noble Scion
Noble Scions hail from prestigious but now fallen families. Your character may have sought mercy from the emperor, leading to a chance to redeem their family’s honor.
Starting Attributes:
- Might: 2 (6% damage bonus; +20% carrying capacity)
- Constitution: 1 (5% max health; 6% poison/bleed resist)
- Dexterity: 2 (7% attack speed; 13% action speed)
- Perception: 2 (6% critical hit chance; 10% elemental resist)
- Intellect: 2 (10 max essence; 12% elemental resist)
- Resolve: 1 (5 max stamina; 12% second wind efficiency)
Noble Scions are versatile characters with a balanced distribution of Attributes suited for various playstyles.
Vanguard Scout
Vanguard Scouts come from humble beginnings and learn to survive through cunning and skill. Saved from execution by the Emperor, they thrive in natural environments.
Starting Attributes:
- Might: 1 (3 damage; +10% carrying capacity)
- Constitution: 2 (10% max health; 12% poison/bleed resist)
- Dexterity: 2 (7% attack speed; 13% action speed)
- Perception: 3 (9% critical hit chance; 15% max range)
- Intellect: 1 (5 max essence; 6% elemental resist)
- Resolve: 1 (5 max stamina; 12% second wind efficiency)
Vanguard Scouts can adapt to different situations, with a strong foundation for critical strikes.
War Hero
War Heroes have demonstrated their battlefield prowess. Though valiant, their experiences may have left lasting marks.
Starting Attributes:
- Might: 3 (9% damage; +30% carrying capacity)
- Constitution: 2 (10% max health; 12% poison/bleed resist)
- Dexterity: 1 (4% attack speed; 7% action speed)
- Perception: 1 (3% critical hit chance; 5% max range)
- Intellect: 0 (no bonuses)
- Resolve: 3 (15 max stamina; 35% second wind efficiency)
Though lacking in smarts, War Heroes bring immense power and resilience to the battlefield.
