In The Outer Worlds 2, you only get one chance to respec your character’s Traits and starting Skills. Once you’ve made your choices, they’re locked in—nothing can be changed later. Unlike the original game or Obsidian’s previous RPG, Avowed, there’s no option to respec later in The Outer Worlds 2, so you need to choose carefully when you start leveling up and live with those decisions. The only time you can reset your Skills and Traits is right after finishing the first mission.
Here’s how to respec in The Outer Worlds 2: After completing the intro mission—where you decide between security ops or central dispatch—you’ll be prompted by Valerie to take a physical and mental test to confirm you’re ready for the mission. During this check, you’ll have the option to select “Respec.” Picking this will allow you to revisit and change your Traits and Skills. If you’re satisfied with your current setup, you can simply skip this step and continue.
It’s a good idea to use this chance to double-check your choices; this is your only real opportunity to tweak your character. The early mission is designed to showcase many different Skills, so it’s worth testing and seeing what works best for your playstyle. Keep in mind, your background, Skill Points, Perks, and Flaws are permanent once confirmed, so choose wisely before finalizing.
