The Dreaded Timekeeper
Borderlands 4 is set on Kairos, a prison planet run by a harsh leader known as the Timekeeper. This ancient ruler controls everyone on Kairos with “bolts,” which are internal devices that can kill at his command.
The moon Elpis entered Kairos’ orbit after the end of Borderlands 3, bringing eridium to the planet and causing chaos among the Timekeeper’s followers.
We meet a few of the commanders: Idolater Sol, who is a loyal follower, and Vile Lictor, a mad scientist. The most intriguing is the Ripper Queen, a rogue leader who has removed bolts from herself and her followers, creating an army of unpredictable but free-spirited warriors.
The narrative director Lin Joyce explained their approach to the Timekeeper: “We looked back at our previous main villains and aimed to create someone who stands out from what we’ve done before.”
Director Sam Winkler emphasized the need for a sense of dread in the game.
We’ll also encounter various groups on Kairos, like the Outbounders, a group of crash-landed rebels, and the Augurs, descendants of the original miners placed there by the Timekeeper. There’s also the Electi, a group of former nobles who became poor after Elpis arrived.
This storyline seems promising and much better than what we saw in Borderlands 3. While a good idea is just an idea until it’s put into action, Randy Pitchford’s enthusiasm for the new title could be justified this time.
