Borderlands 3 didn’t quite have the same charm as the first two games. This could be due to the annoying streamers replacing Handsome Jack, the audience moving away from the game’s silly humor, or the continued presence of Claptrap. Whatever the reason, many fans felt that Borderlands 3 marked a low point in the series.
Now, Gearbox seems to acknowledge this, as seen in the new character trailer for Borderlands 4. The trailer gives a peek into Vex’s life before she became a Vault Hunter and her journey to gain her Sire powers. True to Gearbox’s style, the trailer playfully mocks Borderlands 3.
Even Gearbox Doesn’t Think Borderlands 3 Was All That Great
The trailer features Vex working in a gun shop that sells various items, looking completely bored at her job. Her day brightens when a guy she likes comes in to buy a movie called Deathening 4: Death 4 All. Their conversation humorously points out Borderlands 3’s poor reception.
“Did you see the third one?” Vex asks, and her crush says, “It was okay, Deathening 2: Death to Meet You was way better!” Although some might have missed this exchange amid the chaos, long-time fans recognized the reference to the third game’s disappointing reviews.
This scene is followed by a chaotic Mercenary Sale, where Vex’s powers unexpectedly emerge, resulting in mayhem as she slices through mercenaries, including her crush. The scene then shifts to four Vault Hunters sitting by a fire, revealing that Vex is recounting the story of how she got her powers and the trials of working in retail.
