Once you reach the third stage in Anno 1800, called the Age of Fine Craftsmanship, you’ll start to see Expeditions appear on the World Map. These are risky, text-based quests that require you to send a ship away for a long period. Whether the ship and her crew return safely depends entirely on Morale.
When choosing a ship for an Expedition, you’ll notice that most ships start with very low Morale. To improve your chances of success, it’s important to outfit the ship properly before sending it out.
### What Is Morale in Anno 1800?
Morale is only tracked when the ship is on an Expedition. It has no effect while you’re sailing normally, delivering goods, or fighting pirates. It’s different from the ship’s health points (HP), but both are crucial. Morale is just as vital to the crew’s survival as HP.
> If the ship is on the map, focus on its HP; if it’s off the map, keep an eye on Morale.
Expeditions happen off the map as your ships explore unknown areas. During their journey, you’ll receive various events and decisions that influence how the expedition proceeds. Failing skill checks, bad luck, or mishaps can cause Morale to drop. If Morale hits zero, the expedition fails, and the ship is lost along with her crew.
> Expect that your ship will lose some Morale during each expedition. The more difficult the trip, the bigger the chance of losing Morale.
### How To Get More Morale
When selecting a ship for an expedition, you can see its starting Morale. Ships suited for certain missions—like those with high Naval Power for combat—might start with slightly higher Morale. Overall, initial Morale is usually quite low, often between 10 and 20 out of 100. But don’t worry; you can improve Morale by choosing the right equipment and cargo for the journey.
> Ships that have already been loaded with good cargo or equipped with useful gear—perhaps from a previous trip—will start with higher Morale. However, there’s less room to improve it further if it’s already well-equipped.
All ships have slots for cargo and items that can boost Morale. Larger, more advanced ships can carry more supplies and gear, so sending your best ships on expeditions is generally a good idea—just make sure they are properly outfitted to reduce risks.
> The biggest Morale boosts come from equipped items, but these are rare and hard to find. Keep completing quests and hope you get valuable rewards!
When filling a ship’s cargo hold for Morale, aim to fill each slot with 50 units of a resource. You can do this multiple times with the same resource—for example, bringing 100 barrels of rum. All resources give some Morale, with drinks and high-quality foods providing the most significant boosts.
> If you’re unsure, the best choice is to fill the hold with alcohol. A full stack of 50 units of booze gives a 10-point Morale boost, making it a very efficient way to keep your crew happy!
