Ghost of Yotei closely resembles its predecessor, the highly praised Ghost of Tsushima. However, a major difference in the sequel is that Atsu now has access to various melee weapons beyond just the katana. These weapons serve the same purpose as Jin Sakai’s different combat stances—they allow you to switch quickly during fights to counter specific enemy types. Unlocking all these weapons takes most of the game.
Note: [Warning: Spoilers for progress and minor story details of Ghost of Yotei.]
Atsu has five main melee weapons, each linked to a key story mission in her journey as a wandering samurai. Her collection isn’t limited to melee weapons, either—she also has multiple ranged tools and quick-use items. Below is a guide on how to acquire all of Atsu’s gear, which will take you across every corner of Yotei’s vast Ezo region.
How to Get the Dual Katanas
Hanbei
Seeking out the Dual Katana master is one of the first major steps in Ghost of Yotei. This quest should appear in your rumor cards (the quest log in the bottom left of the map) as soon as you’re free in the Yotei Grasslands after Atsu kills the Snake. Your goal is to find Hanbei, a retired bounty hunter and Atsu’s father’s acquaintance who lives secluded beyond a mountain trail on the west side of the Yotei Grasslands.
The map shows the trail’s starting point, just west of Atsu’s home base. You’ll need to climb a bit to reach Hanbei’s cabin. There, a few cutscenes and a training montage will follow—Hanbei will throw coals at you, which you’ll need to deflect quickly. This test demonstrates the speed advantage of dual katanas. Use them especially against enemies wielding polearms like spears or glaives.
How to Get the Odachi
Master Yoshida
The Odachi is probably the second melee weapon you’ll unlock. You get it from Master Yoshida, whose dojo is located in the northern part of the Tokachi Range. The Tokachi Range connects directly with the Yotei Grasslands, so you won’t need to travel far to find the dojo. The map above marks the spot near Horosaru Falls.
Gaining the Odachi is straightforward. After a short training segment, you’ll help Yoshida defend his dojo from Saito Outlaws. The Odachi is a large, two-handed sword perfect for fighting bigger enemies, like trolls or heavily armored foes.
How to Get the Kusarigama
Master Enomoto
To acquire the Kusarigama—a sickle attached to a chain with a metal ball—you’ll need to journey through two zones. First, head north out of the Tokachi Range and take a ferry across the Great Lake into Nayoro Wilds. Travel north through this area to reach Teshio Ridge, a snowy region of Ezo. Continue further north to find Master Enomoto’s dojo, located beyond the Hakodake Mountains, past the Teshio Ridge.
Enomoto will train Atsu to endure Teshio Ridge’s cold climate, and during this story segment, you’ll also face Lord Saito’s shinobi, including the Kitsune—one of the Yotei Six. The Kusarigama, with its chain and sickle, is effective against shielded enemies, breaking their defenses with powerful strikes. It’s also useful for silent kills from a distance.
How to Get the Yari
Sensei Takahashi
The Yari, a traditional spear, is found in a separate zone. In the northwest corner of the Yotei Grasslands, there’s a pass leading to the Oshima Coast. Here, you’ll learn more about the Matsumae clan, who oppose Saito’s forces, and might encounter a rumor about Sensei Takahashi, who is also fighting Saito’s troops.
Takahashi isn’t at his dojo when you first arrive at the Ishikari Plain but can be found on Modaiwa Island, off the western coast of the plain. His training involves fishing with the spear, but once you have the Yari, use it especially against enemies wielding dual sickles or the Kusarigama.
Where to Find All Ranged Weapons
Bows, Bombs, & Guns
Atsu’s ranged arsenal isn’t tied as directly to main quests but can be obtained throughout Ezo. These include a medium bow called the Hankyu, a long bow called the Yumi, explosive and disorienting bombs, and a matchlock rifle.
Bows:
Buy the Hankyu and Yumi from Ran the Bowyer. He’s usually in inns or visits camps early in the game, with the earliest opportunity being Yotei’s Shadow Inn in the northwest of the Yotei Grasslands.
Bombs:
In the Ishikari Plain, particularly in Fire Cricket Canyon, you can get bombs from Ina the Bomb Maker, who is connected to Takahashi’s quest line. She’ll sell you Scorch Bombs (light enemies on fire) and Blind Bombs (disorient foes).
Tanegashima Rifle:
This late-game weapon is acquired during the main storyline while exploring Oshima Coast. When you pursue the Saito brothers, the rifle will be handed to you as part of the story.
How to Obtain All Quickfire Tools
Shinobi Tools
These items are used by pressing R1 and can be found scattered across Ezo, not necessarily tied to main quests. They include Metsubushi (blinding powder), Kunai (throwing knives), Smoke Bombs, Oni’s Flame (lighting weapons on fire), and Tanzutsu (matchlock pistol).
-
Metsubushi:
Found early, related to a bounty, and used by a wanted ronin against you in a duel. -
Kunai:
Get from Hana in Teshio Ridge during the Oni hunt. She will help you defend her farms and sell upgrades. -
Smoke Bombs:
Received in Teshio Ridge from Oyuki, a shamisen player working against the Kitsune threat. -
Oni’s Flame:
Unlocked through the main story in Ishikari Plain, where you fight enemies with flaming weapons. -
Tanzutsu (Matchlock Pistol):
The last weapon, obtained from Murata’s Workshop on Oshima Coast. You’ll complete a quest to get this firearm, which appears late in the game.
This guide covers all of Atsu’s weapons and how to unlock them. Exploring the regions thoroughly will help you collect each one and customize your fighting style along your journey.
