Once Agent Skills become available in Digimon Story: Time Stranger, your options for customizing your gameplay increase significantly. You’ll already start to understand how Digimon grow, their personalities, and how to evolve them, but now there’s an extra layer that focuses on your main character’s hidden powers, as well as your chosen Digimon partners.
Choosing Agent Skills is straightforward, but because there are many ways to approach the system, it can feel a bit overwhelming. It’s important to understand how to earn the points needed to fill out the skill grids, how to raise your Agent Rank, and why advancing your rank is beneficial.
How to Unlock Agent Skills
To unlock Agent Skills, just play through the main story missions. After a few hours, your Digivice will notify you that new Agent Skills are available, which signals the system has been unlocked. Keep in mind, you won’t be able to access the Agent Skills menu until you’ve completed the first several main story missions. Until then, trying to open it will show a message that it isn’t available yet.
Agent Skills 101
So, what exactly are Agent Skills? How do they operate? Why are they important? If you’ve played other role-playing games (RPGs), you might be familiar with skill grids. These are special menus where you unlock nodes—each with different benefits—by choosing the order in which you unlock them. Each node gives you new abilities or stat boosts, and unlocking one often opens up others.
In Digimon Story: Time Stranger, there are five skill grids:
- Bonds of Loyalty: Unlocks Cross Arts and skills that speed up experience (EXP) gain for different Digimon tiers.
- Bonds of Valor, Philanthropy, Amicability, and Wisdom: Each affects Digimon based on their primary personality group.
Valor, Philanthropy, Amicability, and Wisdom typically influence the stats of Digimon that share those personality traits, allowing you to build stronger teams within each category.
Earning Anomaly Points and Raising Your Agent Rank
Earning Anomaly Points is essential and is mostly done by completing missions. You earn points from both main story and side missions—so be sure to finish every side task you find. The game will tell you when side missions are available, so don’t overlook them.
However, after finishing a side mission, it’s a good idea to move to another area rather than staying put. This helps ensure you don’t miss out on additional points from new explorable zones. Initially, the points gained from missions will be small, but as you progress, higher-value missions will give you more points. Filling out the grids doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Raising your Agent Rank is very important. Many Digivolution tiers require a certain Agent Rank to unlock, especially ranks 3, 5, and 7, with some Digimon needing Rank 8. Increasing your rank also unlocks more options and improvements across your team.
Choosing the Right Agent Skills for You
In your gameplay, you’ll want to think about how to best spend your limited Anomaly Points. While there’s no wrong way to activate skills, and every choice benefits you, focusing on certain categories can optimize your progress.
It’s generally recommended to prioritize Bonds of Loyalty first, since they unlock powerful Cross Arts, boost overall stats like Body, and increase EXP gain—all of which are very useful. After that, pick two additional categories based on your preferred playstyle. While it’s okay to invest in others, specializing allows you to build stronger characters in specific personality groups rather than spreading your points thin across all areas.
Tips for Progression
Improving your Digivolution options for certain personalities will help meet the minimum stat requirements for evolving specific types of Digimon. Increasing these stats is always advantageous. On the other hand, some skills, like Farm Adaptation, haven’t shown much impact so far, but that might change if you put more effort into Digifarming.
By focusing your efforts, you can better tailor your team and strategies, making it easier to evolve and win battles as you go.
