Monster Train 2: A Beginner’s Guide
Monster Train 2 is an intricate game that features various clan combinations and a wealth of progression options. At the beginning, you’ll encounter six new clans: the Banished, Pyreborn, Luna Coven, Underlegion, and Lazarus League.
Each clan boasts unique mechanics, cards, and champions, making the interactions between them fascinating. The best way to grasp these combinations is to experiment with different cards. This guide will help you with some early strategies, fundamental concepts, and tactics to tackle your initial Covenant levels.
Getting Started
At the beginning of your run, you’ll select two clans: a Primary clan and a Secondary clan.
Your Primary clan determines which Champion you’ll have access to, along with a selection of cards from that clan. During your run, you’ll also discover cards from your Secondary clan.
Keep in mind:
- Each clan has two Champions, but you won’t have access to both at the start. You’ll need to improve your clans by playing the game.
The Pyre
In addition to selecting a clan, you can also choose your Pyre. The Pyre is essential to your train’s survival; if it gets destroyed, you’ll lose your run. Each Pyre has different abilities, which unlock as you complete runs and gain score.
Our personal favorite is the Lifemother’s Pyre, which allows you to duplicate cards—a strategy we find very powerful.
Random Cards
At the start of your run, you’ll receive a set of random cards, typically two spell cards and one unit card. The allocation is random with each run.
Pay attention to the random cards you receive, as they will significantly influence your gameplay. They affect your early decisions, including which artifacts and Champion upgrades to choose, and guide how you develop your deck throughout the run.
Game Strategies
Monster Train 2 thrives on discovering synergies between your clans and cards. One memorable strategy was using the Underlegion to create a massive tower of Funguys with endless health regeneration. If you manage to pull off something exceptional, it can turn the game in your favor.
Here are some strategies to help you construct a great deck:
-
Focus on a few core units. This will help you understand the buff mechanics and experiment with different unit types. Ideally, place a frontliner (a unit with high HP or armor) at the front, with damage dealers and support units behind.
-
Utilize card duplication. You can reduce a spell’s cost to zero using a Merchant of Magic, add Holdover (which returns it to the top of your draw pile), and duplicate it to pack your deck with powerful spells.
-
Don’t disregard direct damage cards. We’ve lost many runs due to insufficient direct damage against backline enemies that heal allies or debuff your cards. Having at least some damage-dealing spells is key.
-
Prepare for the bosses. You can design your deck specifically to counter the final boss, one of the three variations of Seraph:
- For the Corruption variant, use expendable units in the front.
- If facing sweeping units, ensure your backline has enough HP to survive the attack.
With these tips, you should be well on your way to mastering your Monster Train 2 experience. Happy playing!
